Halyard upper selden mast wheels

Dedicated wire sheaves, in my experience, are narrow and might take rope (of a similar specification to the wire) but will probably be too narrow. It is possible to remove wire sheaves and with a bit of enlargement of the slot in the mast - replace with a sheave for rope. This is best done with the mast removed.

If they are dual use, well and good - easy job. How old is the installation?

You or someone with knowledge needs to go up the mast and check.

We changed out sheaves for our wire halyards to rope sheaves, dyneema. We took the mast out and replaced ourselves.

There 1 main differences between the pulley for wire rope and fiber rope.

I assume the existing wire rope is passing over the pulley at the top of the mast.

1) as said is the profile of the groove that supports the section or the rope

2) the diameter of the pulley in relationship to the diameter of the rope.

The diameter of the pulley for wire rope is much larger for the same size rope as fiber rope.

Going from wire to fiber you will need to replace the pulleys for the different pullet profile and the diameter of the pulley should be OK

I have a fairly old Selden mast and the main halyard sheave is stainless intended for wire. It's a V section as opposed to the U for rope, and was (surprisingly) in perfect condition. I switched to Dyneema which runs easily over it, but I suspect that polyester would have been too big (more for the sheave box than the wheel itself).

I should add a caveat. It's probably the case that at high loads the friction will be greater over a V sheave, but we only lift the main to the top with the halyard - all tensioning is done down at the bottom with the cunningham.

Estoy pensando en sustituir mi vieja driza de cable y alambre por una driza de cuerda completa.
¿Es eso siempre posible? ¿O hay ruedas con ranuras solo aptas para alambre?

It seems that you obviously have a higher leven of engineering design than the firms which are in the business of making masts. You should apply for a job.

PVB - I find your sarcasm misplaced and offensive. Roger has provided an erudite comment on sheaves. I find nothing demanding the tone of your answer (and many of your previous answers on other threads).

I do understand you are annoyed you have much less knowledge than Roger - but that goes for many of us. I find many of his post educational and no need for sneering. I would not want him to leave the forum as I, personally, as said, find his posts interesting and illuminating

When I make comments or use words that are, deemed to be, disparaging I get a shot across the bow from a Moderator but I suspect that only occurs if a formal complaint is made. Roger appears to be made of sterner stuff and it, maybe, is like water of a ducks back.

If Roger was a charlatan (and proven as such), on an ego trip of some sort or even selling something then a little cutting humour might be acceptable but I don't recall Roger exhibiting any of these vices.

So, please drop it. I think It is unnecessary. Accepting that my standards, of politeness and humour, might not be those of the majority.

I anticipate joining Roger and having you direct your wit to me, as well - I would complain to the Moderators. I also take the risk I may invoke the wrath of the Moderators (who have a pretty thankless task - but maybe they are very generously paid :) )

edit

I have only just noticed you said almost the same thing on another, current, thread

quote

"Perhaps you should offer your advice to the technical people at Harken, Lewmar, Ronstan and other manufacturers who offer low-friction ball-bearing blocks for high load applications. I'm sure they'd value your thoughts."

unquote

I have to ask - did Roger run over and kill your dog, insult your wife - there must be some reason for this unabated, systematic attack by you on any post that Roger makes.

Maybe its a side effect of lockdown and I should not be so harsh?
