Depends on the size of your bot. Braid on braid is adequate, dyneema/spectra is what you really want. No stretch, no creep under load, easy to splice, easy to handle and you can use a smaller dia then the equivalent braid.
I have 8mm spectra on jib of a fractional rig 21fter. I use hanked on jibs. I still find that the halyard stretches a bit after a bit of sailing. I am fussy about halyard tension when racing. I tried 6mm spectra and that stretched even more. I imagine however that polyester braid would stretch much more. I still use polyester on wire for main halyard it does not stretch but I imagine I will end up with spectra on the main eventually. As said spin halyard is OK polyester braid. good luck olewill
Thinner halliards allow the sail to run up & down with less friction
If you had wire before then thin dynema may be needed if apertures are thinner
I changed from 10 mm braid when i bought a new sail as constant stretching allowed the sail to stretch up & down
Not noticeable on my first cheap sail but very much so on my latest expensive ones
On my 31 ft boat 8 mm is enough
It was suggested that 8 mm is too small but as 8 mm will lift about 4.5 tonnes SWL & that is equal to my boat i decided to stick with it
Chaffe can be a nuisance at the ends so a spare metre is worth it so one can cut a bit off the end
I knot my halliard to the sail with a ball & loop. One needs to remember knots reduce the working load by 25%
