Hallberg rassy hull stripe. 2 pack? or flowcoat?

i thought the boot line above the antifoul was painted Apposed to gelcoat
The rub rail is without doubt Blue gelcoat

Yup. on my boat ( 1981 HR38) at least, its defo gelcoat for the main stripe on the topsides (the bit that takes in the hull ports) not sure about the boot topping, mine is certainly painted (presently really badly) but may or may not be blue or white gelcoat underneath that...

Definitely only use 2 pack paint. Flow coat is a thick polyester resin intended to smooth out roughness of internal GRP. Gel coat is a similar thick polyester resin which relies on the smooth mold to give it a gloss and the next layers of polyester to make a good bond. The Gel means that it is covered with more resin when it has gelled but not hard. Hence good chemical bond. However gel coat or flowcoat are not very good at bonding to old GRP. Although usually adequate. A 2 pack polyurethane is a paint designed to adhere well and give a natrural gloss on the surface. I would try brushing a 2 pack. If it is not a good finish then polish. good luck olewill

thanks will, thats the sort of thing I was wondering about... i.e. how would it bond. etc. Think the way forward then is two pack paint. applied by hand and with sufficient thickness that I can cut it back to achieve a decent finish...

We bought a 47 ft trawler motoryacht that we lived on here in the Usa for a year which was entirely painted by hand with Awlgrip, both the hull and the decks and topsides, by the previous owners and it was a superb job. There is currently a 55 foot trawler on our pontoon at the marina being hand painted above the waterline by a retired liveaboard couple, she rolling on the paint and him tipping off, again an excellent job. We have the benefit I suppose of high ambient temperatures and fast cure times but the downside of high humidity, however Awlgrip seems to work very well when done by hand and not sprayed.
