Hello from Yachting Monthly past!

Those with good memories might remember when Youtube was something quirky, and Chris Beeson and I started doing video walk-around tours of yachts for Yachting Monthly. After amassing millions of views for YM, last year Chris and I got back together to create video boat reviews and tests. We started Yachting Reviews on Youtube: Yachting Reviews

We're not hapless influenzas and we're not relying on scantily clad other halves to attract viewers – some may consider our approach akin to YouTube suicide and say there's no place for fully independent reviews by experienced boat testers, presenting information without endless hyperbole. We say that's nonsense and our viewers agree :)

We're out and about testing and reviewing yachts, old and new, and last month we spent 6 days with Hallberg-Rassy where we tested the New Hallberg-Rassy 370.

I subscribed when the first review appeared on my for you page. I think it was the rustler preview. So nice to have a familiar face back. My favourite types of review. It's really nice to hear honest reviews including the little niggles rather than just glowing praise all the time. Hope the channel grows to sustainable levels. If you ever want to review a Twister mine is in sunny Valencia ;-)

I watched all the way through the HR 370 review, in preparation for the day when the Powerball drops into the right slot. The presenters have devised an excellent format, exactly what a real new-boat buyer would be looking for, no frills, just technicalities and not feeling that you have to explain to people how to use a tap, or a shower, or a toilet, or what the nav station is actually for. I liked the review, and (as above), once started, watched it all the way through and I was captivated by the factual presentation. Personally, I was fascinated by the solar cell material laid all over the foredeck of the HR-370 and would have appreciated a bit more input on how this works in practice, what you'd have to do to look after it and what numbers it can achieve in terms of equipment usage onboard. But what a gorgeous boat! A good start and I look forward to more of the same, especially reviews of the Alubat medium-sized range, which will also be on the list of possibles when the lottery numbers come up!

Thank you. We would have liked to get some figures from the solar panels, but in December, in Sweden, the sun (on the one day we saw it) rarely went above the height of a setting sun, so it wasn't really fair on the panels to quote figures from them. This pic was taken at 1pm!

We have a new video about the hull construction now:

I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. Thank you for the offer. Our business partner (and former YM editor) Kieran has a Twister, although his is on the hard in the Netherlands at the moment.😀

Good luck to you. Print media is doing terribly, it’s also not a great environment for a normal white male. We all need to make a living. I hope you make it work in the new media.

Must be the same review that has just turned up on my page:

Enjoyed it, but 55 minutes with a presenter going “err.,,,” rather a lot?

And one of my pet hates is quoting ex-VAT numbers.

€500k is probably still in the range where most buyers won’t buy offshore. Appreciate that VAT rates vary and that provides a reason for referencing the ex-VAT number but it feels like an artificial way to make the price seem smaller than what it will actually feel like to a real life buyer.

Regarding exVAT I would normally agree, but I suspect a very substantial part of HR purchases are now bought exVAT.
Used to be a lot of Canadian and USA purchasers (though the latter market crashed due to T tariffs causing HR to have serious issues) and many UK residents buy to immediately go off cruising - in Europe or across the pond.

Interesting.

Just out of curiosity I looked on Yacht World where all of the 2023-2025 HRs that were listed and where a price was quoted (one 2023 boat didn’t seem to have a price) stated ‘VAT included’.

I’m not sure whether the brokers meant that VAT had been paid at some point or that the proposed transaction would be subject to VAT.

But, it did seem as though VAT was going to be relevant at some point.

I just think it would be helpful for reviewers to say something like “€500k ex VAT, meaning €600k if you’re buying it in a jurisdiction where VAT is 20%”.

What a shame, I was really looking forward to being shown around the boat but Chris Beeson clearly went to the same school of presenting as Toby Hodges at Yachting World. These presentations are as dull as dishwater. The camera work pretty shocking too.

Contrast them to Andrew Adams of Parker Adams who can show all the pertinent points of a boat in a quarter of the time in a clear, punchy and relevant dialogue. For example ...

Very interesting to see how the moulds work.

I've often wondered if it was possible to order a new HR (wishful thinking, of course - one can dream...) without the hull lights - Presumably not it would seem as they are built into the mould.
