Hallberg Rassy 352 v Westerly Oceanquest v Moody 346

Re: Ask an owner...

main reason I chucked my SHE 32 in for a Sweden 41 - SWMBO couldn't get on with it and though it was fun sailing with the lads if we're ever going to liveaboard..

I also had to go sailing alone or with friends. No way were the wife and kids spending the night.

Should have made 'em!

As a family we holidayed on a 32' wooden yacht with 8' beam and three fix berths and one pipe-cot and I slept on a lilo on the cabin sole. Yes it was wet (Scotland) but it was great fun and great sailing.

The boat didn't smell. It was clean. part of the jobs we all did each day. My parents wouldn't dream of us not all going 'en famille'

Shame that you think all sailing on all old cramped, smelly wet boats was the same. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Ask an owner...

Pride of ownership does matter, and thats one thing you pay for with a brand like HR.. The reality is that for most practical purposes you would be just as well off with a Benny and the money saved in the bank, but life isnt rational.

Buy what you will enjoy owning most. Forget trying to justify your choice.

Just noticed that "Moondance" is for sale at £56k, so please ignore my previous pricing comment. She looks a beautiful yacht too. How do you find the aft cabin? Is it large enough for 2 people to sleep comfotrably (The wife is only 9 stone, so doesn;t take up too much space)

Sorry for the delay - only just spotted this. I dont want to give you a sales pitch in public, but to answer your question about comfort -

I am 6ft 6ins and somewhat overweight even for my height. SWMBO, shall we say, takes up more space than yours. One of the main attactions of a Moody 346, or any centre cockpit Moody come to that, is the aft cabin. It has standing headroom for short people, and plenty of storage.

We have found ithe boat to be very comfortable, for ourselves and other couples for a long weekend, although one of the main criteria for upgrading (to a 44) is to provide a more space for ourselves and guests. Having said that, the 346 is very easily sailed by a couple, which usually means single handed in our case!

On price, I know we are at the top end of the range, you can get a boat 2 years older for less than 50k, but not with the same degree of renewed equipment.

(PS Happy to give you a guided tour /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

I had a 346, but I found the aft bunk too small for the 2 of us she 9st me 13st so not huge, now got a 422 still a moody and am delighted with it, as always you pays your money, but the westerly has a similar size aft bunk to the Moody, dont know about HR but they cost plenty.

Re: Ask an owner...

Have just done this exercise and looked at all three makes; we compared a late HR352 (88), a 10 year old Moody 36 and a 2000 Westerly Oceanquest all priced at about the same level, we opted for a Moody due to the space, build quality and light and airy cabins. Just now awaiting the survey report and if all well its ours by the end of the month. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had for years lusted after a HR until we actually went on board a couple. Desparately disappointed - very dark and cramped.
