Hallberg Rassy 312 vs modern leisure yachts

Sounds like an interesting challenge!
Can we have the return leg in a force 8 please?
Have to agree, though, that the big HRs mainly sail like bricks.

Spent 6 weeks in the Carib on a friends HR40, one season old.

Found that by and large the boat was excellent. She stood up to her canvas very well; we didn't reef in under 25 knots, and only then if it was forward of the beam. She had crossed the Atlantic and managed some considerable speeds, easily over 10 knots (with a Twistle rig) when the trades set in. We had six on board for a couple of weeks; bit crowded, but quite manageable. Not as pretty as some of the older designs, but an excellent boat that will hold her price better than the AWB's of half the price.

But you could buy 2 AWB's of the same size for the price my friend payed for his boat. So you get what you pay for; personal choice.

If you have the chance of an HR312 I would not look at anything else. The build quality of the older HR's is fantastic and will long outlive one of today's cheepo equivalants.......go for it and enjoy

Paul.
