Hallberg-Rassy 312 engine to take out

Hello.
Which engine ?
MD21 ? This one is mostly fitted to the HR.
A friend of mine had a HR 35 ft with the MD21. (sold last year)
He changed to D2-55 , and he had to change the prop from left
to right hand and the pitch . And many houres working.
The cheapest (= best ?) solution is to refit the original engine ,
there is no change need in the adaption to the fundament
or the propshaft.....
Good luck und success

I assume it has the normal Volvo 2003 Saildrive unit. If this is the case it is relatively easy to just uncouple the engine from the saildrive, unbolt the engine mounts from the bed, slide it forward until the engine is disengaged from the input shaft to the gearbox and lift it out of the boat.

What you do then depends on whether you are going to replace the engine or rebuild the existing engine. The latter is perhaps not a good idea as it is expensive and you end up with a 30+ year old engine for which parts are getting scarce and expensive. The obvious replacement is a D1 30 which fits almost straight in, but suggest you also replace the saildrive with a new one. Volvo dealers usually do a good package of engine and saildrive. If you do try to save money you should at least replace the diaphragm and overhaul the lower end of the drive with new seals. You will also need to change the propeller as your drive has a different reduction ratio than the one that normally goes with the D1 30.

Hope this is helpful

Hi, I have a MkII 312 and changed the engine and sail drive last year. We went from the 2003 and s120 to a D1-30 and s130 saildrive. The company tha supplied it did the calculations on the prop and our 16x12 two blade folder was fine, so we kept with it, a season in and it works fine. The old engine come out very easily, although the spray hood and hoops need to be removed.

Oh, you will almost certainly need a high rise exhaust elbow, be sitting down when you get the quote for that!
To the op, if you want any more details PM me.
