Hallberg Rassey - anode \'optional\'

Speaking to the owner of a HR37 today. He bought it new (didn't like to ask how much) and it looks just 3 or 4 years old. He is having to fit a new folding prop (didn't ask about that either) as the original has been eaten to death. Apparently the fitting of a hull anode is only done at the buyers request and is not standard. Bit of surprise isn't it?

AHA! Another one. Bet it was a Volvo. If it was it comes as no surprise to me.
I say again - beware of bronze folding propellers!

He said the new was a Variprop. He is having a go at HR over the anode issue as he fairly thinks that the prop on a squillion pound boat should last more than just a few years. He has a shaft drive not a deadly saildrive.

A prop should last for ages without cathodic protection if it made of a decent alloy. the Westerly I sail is 30 years old and still has the original prop and no anodes.

If it is marina based and left connected to shorepower then that may be the real cause. If so does it have a galvanic isolator?

The HR37 superceeded the 36 in 2004.

They are sail drive not shaft drive.
He should have checked the spec when he ordered.
Was it in Bradwell perchance?
Owners sometimes order a very basic spec and add all the goodies later. This can cause problems.

Only the latest HR37s have saildrive. And no, HR dont fit a hull anode as standard (you dont need one in the Baltic!).

Engine and Engine Room
Engine: Yanmar 4JH4E, 40 kW/54 HP 4 cylinder 2.2 Litres cylinder volume. Mounted with four rubber feet on strong foundations and saildrive to reduce vibration and noise. Twobladed folding propeller.

The cost of altering the standard saildrive to a shaft would be huge even if it were actualy possible, if one commisioned such an alteration, one would expect to have checked more basic requirements such as cathodic protection would one not.

Launched with shaft drive...

As pandroid said, the HR37 had a Volvo Penta D2-55 with shaft drive when it was launched in 2003. The Yanmar with saildrive was introduced in spring 2005.

No - had a Prout cat that want fitted with an anode when new and had no problems in the first 10 years. And Prout knew what they were about when it came to cruising boats.

Mind you, maybe HR have got the BMW syndrome now they are so popular. Hull extra! Mast extra, sails extra. etc

[/ QUOTE ] It's possible you've never actually seen a Hallberg-Rassy price list. Sure, they offer a range of optional equipment to meet specific owners' needs, but the standard specification is simply huge - much more comprehensive than you'd probably imagine.

If its saildrive, you don't need one anyway. Saildrive is electrically isolated from engine. Hull anode will not protect anything. Prop anode and saildrive anode do that job, but prop anode doesn't last long, as securing screws encourage loss at them and multipart anode falls off long before its used up.

I've heard this said before, but still don't understand it. I took my saildrive out a few years ago to change the seal, and as far as I could see all the connections were made using metallic fasteners. I could see no evidence of insulation anywhere. What have I missed?

Actually, I should be at the boat tomorrow so if I remember I'll do some prodding around with an ohmmeter to check!

I would be interested to see results of probing. VP state in manual, it insulated, so don't earth it. Let us know.

I did consider a new HR the last time we changed boat, and whilst the standard spec is reasonable |I certainly wouldnt call it huge. If memory serves me, for example, it didnt include a radar refelctor which in my view makes it "not fit for purpose" since it doesnt comply with SOLAS as delivered. But I'm being facetious really - I just find it irritating the way that good products migrate into aspirational brand names, aquiring silly prices in the going, and prices lists festooned with extras. Marketing seems to be all aboput increasing the price of everything until it isnt really worth the figure asked.

Checked today (well yesterday, now!). Under 1 ohm between engine body and either prop hub or anode, i.e. what appears to be a good electrical connection to all parts of the leg. The only insulated metal was some fixings of the Kiwiprop that are set into plastic. BTW mine's a 1989 VP2002 with a 120S sail drive. (I think I've got the last part right: I'm pretty sure it's a 120 and fairly sure about the S)

I take it you mean the Owners Manual? Mine's on the boat, but I do have an electronic copy carefully filed away "somewhere". If you point me to the reference I'll try to dig it out.
