Hello all i am having problems with my automatic life jackets when trying to get the new super bobbins onto the domes without the salt breaking up leaving me at square one.
I have tried a little wd40 on the dome and twisting to try help it on to no avail so do any of you guys know a nack to it?,i am thinking of taking a round file and filing the plastic clips a little as this is becoming an expensive diy effort.

I haven't actually got one of these style to hand.. but from memory

(1) are you putting them in the correct way round?
(2) I don't seem to think they push all the way on.. just rest them in place and screw the fitting back together.. it will compress the spring.

Tell me if this is tosh - but it's all from memory of my previous lifejackets..

This is correct, not tosh :)
The Yellow tablet is placed into its housing (in only one orientation - lined up by three slots of different sizes), then you screw the bobbin over the top of it, and in doing so, compress the spring. Should take around 10 seconds to do one.

I too once struggled with screwdrivers and pliers at first - before asking the local RNLI Lifejacket man to give me a brief lesson on all the common types. Now I know.

When I had to replace all this it took the suppliers ( in Swansea ?? ) 3 attempts to send me the right bits; are you sure you've got the correct items ?

I would have been stuffed without an intact LJ to refer to, and indeed send photo's of !

Dates on salt bobbins

Hi Guys

Just bought 2 salt bobbins from the local chandler (€11.50 each) to find that the date on them is 2002. On checking the bobbins I want to replace I find that they are dated 2006 and 2008. What does the date printed on the Halkey Roberts bobbin represent? How are we supposed to know if it is the manufacturing date (as I have been told) or the expiry date. All the bobbins appear to be in the same condition regardless of date. Are they still being manufactured?

Any ideas or anybody from Halkey Roberts reading?

Thanks

Halkey Roberts PDF gives life of bobbins Shelf Life 3 years Service life 3 years, so any date before 2006 expired, but could be 2009 if in service.

Just found this as I was googling something else and new to the forum.
The Super Bobbin in straight forward to replace.
Unscrew the cover, pop the new bobbin in to the inflator. It will only go in one way with the white cellulose visible as you drop it in. The Bobbin has slots which line up with the groves on the inside of the inflator.
Once you have dropped it in place, just screw the cover back on until tight - the red indicator will gradually turn green as you tighten up the cover.

There's a good video here which uses the Halkey Roberts 840 manual inflator, but the method is the same with Alpha inflators.

NB. Make sure the inflator is dry before you add in a new bobbin :)
