I have been asked to post a quick note to once again pick all your brains out there.

Yacht Halcyon has just had her new copper put on, and it looks stunning. I am well aware that this wont last unfortunately.

However, is there a way to lacquer the top 6 inches to keep it gleaming? Has anyone tried this or is it futile to even think about it?

Thanks again for your help you guys are a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge!

Regards,
Robert

no harm in trying, tho of course you lose the copper properties by lacquering...

I wd use a fast-drying clear primer suitable for metal, to seal it, such as praps UCP (?) though others might have better suggestions. Once sealed you could then use a top coat to lacquer, but i think a thin coat is a key requirement rather than lots of gloop.

Mask just above the waterline and probably leave unmasked below.

To apply, i think i wd sand/polish with the finest wet/dry paper you can find, 1000 grade at least, with two people the sander-bod working just ahead of the painting to seal with no oxide.

I still think it will go off tho, and sadly it is a bit pointless.

But i do know what you mean by the glorious copperness. We sheathed a boat hull in copper and it seemed some people made special visits to se the "Golden Boat" ...

Its the water line and just below that gets foul the soonest with the sun light. The copper and better TBT keeps the fouling at bay.

If you laquer or cover the copper the area will not be protected and foul! You could try listing the boat and polishing everyday??

This is what TCM means:

Gosh!Is that tcms boat??

Now i see why he hasent any trouble finding a place in summer in the med!

But why anchor in 500 meters way out at sea? Perhaps hes got his own drilling platform and has added protected moorings? And tax free? Bars sun lounges for the rich?? A floating jet set island in the med??And hes the president and government?
