Hi all , I am sure this might be a sticky ? I am looking for a pocket cruiser with a budget of 9k (sterling).

My first choice would be a Halcyon 27 through what I have read, few people I know, have throw in. Liz 29
or contest 29. any others . My brief is

Long keel ( unless someone can convince me other wise. )
capable offshore (looking to do Jester challenge in 2015)
easy ! single handed
standing headroom of 5, 10
In budget of 9k .

Fore`s and against on above boats ?????

Thanks
Neil

I used to have an H27, and sometimes regret selling her.

Others?

Look at these:

Invicta, Nicholson 26, Bowman 26, Contessa 26, Cutlass 26, Great Dane 28.

I've probably missed some, too.

I'd look for condition, and standard/ age of the gear, rather than deciding on any particular class.

The great Dane is a Handsome ship indeed
all those listed are short on LWL & by to days standards, slow

Thanks Guys, Looks like ive got some trawling on the net to do and driving the uk to find my right boat , Did not realise that you can some quality pocket cruiser for under 10 k . I have a Cleopatra 850 for sale on ebay if anyone wants to swap for a pocket cruiser please get in touch , keep the suggestion coming , Thanks again

Chuck a Vega on the list too, why not.
I've never sailed a Halcyon 27 but they look 'right'.
And as NealB said, inventory and condition trump everything else.

For most of those don't go anywhere near £9k, think half of that and 2/3 for a fully sorted one. There are exceptions in that list but however good they are, they're unfashionable & long in the tooth cruisers. Nothing what-so-ever wrong with that, just don't pay north of £7k for a good re-engined one.

another thought I had was buying a project pocket cruiser like the ones I listed above , and converting to a junk rigged, ive done a bit of research, no one fore coming on how much to convert to a junk .

There was a great article in a free online East Coast sailing magazine, hopefully someone can remember the link, where Roger Taylor (of Mingming fame) explained how he converted his Achilles 24 to Junk rig. The bit I remember is that he used an aluminium lampost as the mast. I can't walk past a lampost now without thinking of that.

what wattage is his anchor lamp

The Halcyon Clipper is a great cruising boat, and funnily enough, mine will be for sale at the end of the season, with new engine and gas installation. If you can find a goodun near you, have a look. You might be suprised!

This would nn do the job for you, and she already has a vane. I'm not sure that I would pay that price unless the sails, the windows, the engine and the wiring were in perfect condition

This one n might clean up nicely, if you got her for the right price.

(no connection, just another satisfied I26 sailor: here's mine, with a slack forestay)

Hi Neil,

As a long term owner of a Liz 29 I can recommend them although you might have to take your slippers off to get the standing headroom. Depends on how deep the sole is set.

For £9k you will get a very good one indeed. As with all old boats you could never sell it for more than £8k but if you try and buy one they all start at £10k. You might look out for a Liz 35 which is the same but a bit bigger. Only 9 built in UK but more in France by Wauquiez, a very pretty boat. Same with the 29, there are many French built ones around.

The owners association is not particularly active, but PM me if you want any more info.

David

I can recommend a Cutlass 27 as a lovely boat to sail. You'd get an excellent one for £9k.

FOR: Lovely motion; solid build; looks nice; almost 6' standing headroom under the hatch; faster than you'd think; no slapping noises when trying to sleep at anchor; no keel bolts to worry about.

AGAINST: No space below; never goes the same way astern under power twice; tends to fall on its nose when drying out; 4'6" draught.

You couldn't do better than to meet the Jester chaps on their way back from their jaunt to Fastnet - this week, I think. Check out their forum - these chaps do know what they are talking about. I'm not all that convinced about the necessity of a long keel. We have a Sadler 29 with a deep fin and with a Sea feather wind vane, she's steady on and off the wind. Overall budget is what you need to address, not just purchase price! And if you do shift from long keel, the Etaps can be quite a good buy. Consider shopping around in Brittany - good choice of boats in your size & price range.

Halcyon 27s are great boats - but so are the others suggested above. Look around and try to get a boat with a replacement engine. Lots of boats of that era had an 'auxiliary' engine cos 'gentlemen' were sailors. These days we use engines a lot more.THe Halcyon 27 had a Sabb diesel if I remember correctly. Its the engine that will cost an arm and a leg to replace if you find your boat is underpowered when you need to get home against the previaling wind.

It's a buyer's market at the moment - as friends of mine selling a beautiful classic boat are finding out. Most of the boats described above are from the era of boats designed to sail, not as floating caravans so make sure you compare the accommodation with what SWMBO wants. Funny thing is, when you see the right boat it will probably be immediately obvious it's the right one. Happened to me twice.........

Here's a link to the thread where the article discussing Roger Taylor's conversion of an Achilles 24 to junk rig was discussed.

Probably anyone serious about a junk rig conversion has already discovered the yahoo junk rig group, but I mention it here as it is an invaluable resource.

Also, Fascadale, you have a very beautiful boat, all the more beautiful for her proud Scots ensign.
