Anyone ever replaced the bearing on a Halcyon 23. Mine is a 1972 and has an old fashioned stuffing box and a 7/8th shaft. Is it just an interference fit? Presumably if so, a puller will help extract the old bearing and the new one will just drive home with a wooden drift or similar. I'd just like to know what to expect when I remove the shaft and the packing.

What I'm wondering about is what the packing compresses against...there's a 'top hat' like fixture that bolts on to two studs. Does anything else need to come off to reach the bearing?

I've never done a bearing before and would just like some help. The only other Halcyon 23 owner who has done it had a different kind of cutlass bearing - the water cooled type.

It should be a bronze bush that your packings are pushed against. I bet you'l have a proper job getting it out . Consider making a dummy pressing tool 7/8 then stepped to mach the bush with a threaded center so you can fit a slide hammer . Untill you get it apart you'l not know whats in there.
Cheers
Mick

smile you'l be on your boat soon ;-)

thanks mtb..........that sounds sensible.....I thought it would be something simple but a pain in the arse....obviously I'll need to get the bush off first before I can get a stud and puller through to the outside to pull out the bearing. I'll wait a week or so and then when the weather's a bit better spend a weekend on it. I've found that the actual job usually takes ten minutes but the messing about because things have seized on takes hours and hours. Wish me luck. Anyone else got any suggestions as to what I might find?

Have you tried contacting the Owners Club?
