Much commercial progress has been made in the last couple of years, and they are now more available.

In checking the 1st Aid kit last week, (i.e. chucking out dry elastoplast and crumbled painkillers) I thought about adding a few suitable haemostat dressings.

Any recommendations from serious 1st aiders or military/ blue light types please ?

Have used them for a few years. The first generation were a bit unrefined ( some got hot and most were pretty messy as it was powder or granules ) but all the new gauze impregnated stuff is good.

I'd use Celox gauze if I had to choose.

The First Aid at Sea requalification before my most recent one was taken by a Parachute Regiment Battlefield Paramedic. Probably the best First Aid course I've ever taken!

He recommended

Emergency Care Battle Field Dressing / Israeli Bandage

Available via Amazon and other outlets.

Which reminds me I need to go through my First Aid Kit again. With this summers trip to almost 60 degrees north I might need some stuff for frostbite.

Israeli bandages, with the integral tightening system are great, but aren’t haemostat dressings. I carry both Celox gauze and Israeli dressings.

I’ve always worked hard to avoid applying my own medic training I got in myself but 9 weeks ago I screwed up with a circular saw and had to use both on my own hand. Both really do work and the Celox haemostat dressings were very effective...... and my hand had healed and I’m back on the water!
