Got an invite recently to crew on a yacht for this and the next 4 Sundays, racing round the cans on the Medway. Being a total newbie we went for a bit of a practice run yesterday. There was a nice breeze blowing and we did plenty of tacks and messing about with the spinnaker, etc. This was preceeded with hauling a volunteer up the mast to untangle a line. I made the big mistake of wearing thermals and ended up sweating like a pig.
Today was the first race and I dressed according to yesterdays experience. Almost as big a mistake as yesterday as there was very little to do. Wind barely ever exceeded F2 and most of the race was spent staring at empty sails. For about half an hour the wind completely dissapeared. It was not until a pot of tea had been brewed that the very gentle breeze started to pick up again.
Bit of a slow day but had a real good time and am looking forward to next week.
