Just received this from HHA :

With immediate effect the gate at the top of the gangway between the leisure vessel pontoons and Ha’penny pier will be locked daily at 17:00 hrs for the security of our stakeholders. Access between 17:00 and 09:00 hrs is only possible using a code. Please note that if you do not have the code you will not be able to gain access to the pontoons.

Ha’penny pier is manned by a Pier Master between the hours of 08:00 to 09:00 hrs and 16:30 to 17:30 hrs (including weekends and bank holidays). During the summer school holidays, the pier is manned between 08:00 to 09:00 hrs and 12:30 to 17:30 hrs.
The Pier Master’s office is located at the entrance to Ha’penny pier. The Pier Master can also be contacted on 07748154039.

If I read it correctly, boats wishing to stay overnight will be given the code, so what is the problem? Please realise that I may be half a bottle of wine up on you.

I suppose, as we know about it, it won't be the end of the World. But for someone who doesn't know, arriving when the pier master isn't there, going ashore and returning in the evening, that might be a bit of an issue. I'd imaging though, there'll be some signs up warning the unwary

It'll only be a week or two before everyone in Essex knows the code anyway. I can see that there might be the occasional problem, but I imagine that in most cases it will be easy enough to get the code from another boat.

I wasn't aware that there was a security problem here. I generally think that a pontoon or mooring facility in full public view may actually be safer than one hidden away. I also think that it goes some way to educating the public about the nature of yachting, especially in that many or most boats are actually quite modest and not owned by the super-rich.
