F*ck I hope not.

Not because I go around nicking GPS's (often), but I wouldn't like anyone to be able to pinpoint me when using a GPS.

I think it may be possible though. I've heard proposals of gps being fitted in cars to imposed road tax based on mileage.

Really scary

Better keep your mobile switched off then, Jim.

'They' already know which cell you are in, and shortly, via a triangulation method, they will be able to pinpoint you down to 100m or so. Now, this is primarly for data services like traffic services, where's the nearest ATM etc, but for those concerned about Big Brother, its another Bad Thing.

Nope. A GPS is a receiver, not a transmitter. If it doesn't radiate anything then you can't trace it.

Sorry about that.

Bit I understand the marriage of cell phone with gps is next on the list for techno revolution. When you dial 999 the phone will tell the police where you are. And when you drive into London the five quid will be put on your phone bill. That's one of the reasons the Europeans are launching their own gps satellites. We ain't seen nuthin yet...

The truth of the matter was that Orwell was only out by a couple of decades.

Yes cell phones are, if neccesary, traceable to the nearest +/-400mts when on land. Exactly in the same manner that a VHF transmission position can be identified from the land signal stations.

The worst of it is you dont have to make a call to be identified. The phone is continously transmitting its identity every 3 to 4 mins.

I fear that one day it will be compulsory to keep one on oneself.

Oopps sorry got carried away ..................

Its not quite a simple as that. Cell ID can be miles in rural areas, but down to 400m in cities.

Actually with the newer ways coming, there's actually strong EU legislation requiring operators to get subscriber opt-in before location data can be used for services.

Obviously the police will be able to get at the data. I, for one, will welcome this advance. With 2 kids rapidly approaching the age when they wont always have their folks alongside, I'd welcome this ability for the police to instantly trace mobiles.

The old days ....

When Mobiles were still analogue and early days in the baltic ... they cost megabucks ... 800 - 900 US dollars was not unknown !!

One of my inspectors lost his phone in a bar one night and I called the mobile phone to see where it was and if we could get it back .... the owner of the bar very nicely answered and said no problem ..... send your guy round now and he can have it ....... once you give me 200 dollars !!!

Needless to say his salary that month was suitably docked !!

Sad to say it is less than that in towns. there is base station about every 100m in parts of town centres now for each operator. you won't notice them tho. in the country side they are as is suggested much further, 4km plus if it is really rural

The future is target marketing. Your phone will be linked to your credit card which will now your spending patterns. So as you pass into a cell that contains your profile shops you will receive adds for those shops and notice of special offers. that is the thinking. the reality is it will only be the big players who spend ( ie the same people who currently have billboards up plus a few other chains that do telly adverts) so your local boat bits shop will not be able to afford to do it, unless they can get their suppliers to do it.

Beer! Now there's a temporary solution.
