Hi,

I was thinking of taking some friends for a nite out in gunwharf quay - portsmouth.
However i heard that you have to have a boat 50ft and over to moor near to gunwharf quay? Is this true?
I would like to go clubbing, therefore i want to be parked as near to the pubs/clubs as possible, anyone ever done this?

btw, my yacht is 38ft.

thanks guys!

Before you do this, make yourself up-to-date with the new rules and regs abt getting over to the Gunwharf side of the harbour.

Hi, we moored up briefly last weekend and went for a coffee and a danish-
excellent selection of coffee shops etc. My boat is 26ft and we were not
charged for the hour or so. Normally short stay for 8metre would be 8pounds
and overnight 22pounds. There was good security with a sliding barred metal
gate of the sort normally seen in prisons. (Well in the films)

Sounds good, thanks!

What should i tell the QHM when i wish to cross the deepwater channel?
Just ask permission to cross to gunwharf?
Just that i best get it right!

so long as you book then they seem to have no problem with smaller boats.

QHM's not scary at all. Correct procedure would appear to be on the lines of: "QHM, this is QM2, QM2, requesting permission to cross from the Ballast Buoy to Gunwharf Quay, please. Over"

Except don't call yourself the QM2, obviously, cos it wouldn't fit in Gunwharf, and I think it might give QHM a heart attack if it tried.

Simon - just a quick comment. You need to enter Portsmouth Harbour via, the small boat channel on the western side of the harbour entrance. If coming in from the Eastern side - from say Chichester - you should enter at No4 buoy and proceed inwards. You may not cross the main channle untill you reach Ballast bouy - port lateral marker - just past Haslar Marina. At this poingt you are required to contact QHM on Channell 11 and request permision to cross. A simple - "QHM this is ............ permission to cross from Ballast to Gunwharf, Over!" will suffice. On given permission, cross at 90 degrees into Gunwharf. Please also not that you are required to obtain permission to leave Gunwharf in the same way as you entered. A point to note, unlike most marinas, Gunwharf can not be contacted via Ch. 80. If you want to gurantee a berth youu should ring them and make a booking 24 hours ahead. Particularly at w/e's if you want to stay overnight.

Another point - you should also leave Ballast bouy to Port on both entering and leaving via the small boat channel. In effect, this acts as a seperation scheme postioning you for the channel.

You should also be using your engine on entering PH! This must remain on and engaged.

Not sure yet - depends what comes up. I'm doing duty Saturday and VHF course Sunday. So, thinking about it probably not. How did your duty go yesterday??
