Gunwhale protective strip/fendering question

looking for ideas for my newly restored GRP sailing dinghy protective gunwhale fendering strip. The lip on the boat is roughly 25mm wide so fendering would obviously have to be narrower than this. I have looked at the "D" profiled fendering in PVC or Rubber but think the finish wont be so great since have to drill it to screw it to the boat and think the outer edge will never look great even if i fill the drilled holes, is there a better way of doing it, could i glue it somehow or would this just not be strong enough to hold it. Otherwise is there anything else someone can suggest. I like the idea of finding someone who sells a narrower D profiled strip that may be glued say about 15mm wide, i just can't seem to find anyone selling anything of this size, any advice appreciated.

Can you run a length of metal, say a strip of aluminium, down the inside of the 'D' rubber moulding and attach it to the hull with 'Pop' rivets of a suitable length inserted from inside the hull?

Have just taken some rubber fendering off my Clinker Sailing Dingy to replace it with rope. it might suit, it is screwed on then a strip goes in the middle to hide the srews. 15mm deep so don't know if it will suit. Let me know if you are interested.

thanxs for the replies, have decided to fill the old fenderings fasteneing screw holes and finish to the same as the top deck, have been looking around at sailing dinghies in magazines and it apears that very few have this strip of fendering round them so think this will do. Will just use those movable inflatable fenders when needed.
