Does anyone know if the marina at Gunwarf has gone bust?

We had a great couple of days there last Easter and decided to return this Easter expecting to see the new shower blocks and pontoon electricity. We were very dissappointed and left after one night - £31.50 for no electricity (the new boxes were out of order), no water as the hose had broken off and the portacabin showers of last year had been reduced to just one tatty shower block. Even work on the spinnaker tower seems to have ground to a halt.

Despite being Easter weekend the marina was less than 1/3rd full - if we had known earlier we would have gone elsewhere. This has to be the most expensive and least equiped so called marina on the south coast.

I'm afraid I don't know where Gunwharf Quays is but I can promote Salterns at Poole by comparison - we stayed for a mere 4 hours and were charged over £30 some 7 years ago. Should this become the worst marina thead ?

Well I do have a recommendation - did you see that Ramsgate have won an award - 11% increase in turnover - that's all the people that leave ASAP because you get ripped off for a filthy pontoon with no services for pukka prices. Yuuk !

Re: I second Salterns

Easter Sunday I paid £52 plus £8.50 harbour dues in Salterns (£60.50) for a 45' boat. Previous nights - Alderney was £16 Guernsey £20 and Cherbourg £22!

Re: I second Salterns

It's a shame isn't it, that we can't collectively boycott these places? I know that we say "never been back" etc. but there's always someone else that is pleased to get in or doesn't want to shop around. Apart from the cost of real estate here in the UK, which does increase costs, we all seem resigned to the fact that we're ripped off in yet another area.

Come the revolution brother!

I went to Ramsgate on Friday night - Nice Marina (1/2 empty) I had my own berth - in fact there were so few people there everyone had a double berth (makes parking the boat a bit less embarassing!) it was £15 for a 30 footer (the harbour master put us down as 9.4metres instead of 9.5) Loads of electricity and water points.) Nice showers, the towns a bit naff but there was a nice thai restaurant and it is easy sailing distance to calais (30 miles i think) or dover or the thames estuary (8-9 hours for us from the Orwell) I certainly would go back - probably do a bit of research on things to do if I spent a couple of days there.
Its also a very handy stop enroute to the south coast or france for us east coasties.

Re:peppermint

Gunwharf has made a cult of the worst kind of exclusiveness - they have been quoted as "not wanting a load of little yachts from Chichester coming in for lunch". If they are finding that to be a bad way of running a business - serve 'em right!

Re:peppermint

Well I know of at least one restaurant there that has gone bust and the outlets seem to change hands fairly regularly. So maybe whilst they are trawling round for World Girdler's starts and finishes, maybe they ought to encourage some of the serious lunching and shopping "little yachts" can do? I wonder what the bars and outlets think..

Re: Shopping/Dining at Gunwharf

Indeed it's popular with the fairer sex. It's also a great place to get to for us - train from Petersfield to Portsmuff Harbour station and a 5 min walk, great for visitors/crew changes. Good if going to cinema, out and turn right for boat instead of left and join the queues out of the car park. It's all a bit new and 'themey' for my tastes (more a scruffy Camber man myself).

We get a special rate, but not letting on how!

You supplied the Spinnaker Tower? That ought to be good for a special rate.

Re:The Shops are doing fine.

Any new shopping centre has a bit of churn. This happens when the introductory rent offer finishes, or the dreamers who didn't have a good business model hit the buffers. Restaurants are common business failures.

I suspect that the marina is not seen as a sailing carpark for shoppers or even a revenue stream but as a promotional tool. Thats why the hype is never ending and the day to day running is not taken seriously.
