Where else is a nice 'out and back' day sail from Falmouth? I'm up to speed on Carrick Roads and Truro River, and I've been to Helford. Anywhere else recommended?

Mevagissey. If there's no space, as is often the case, Port Mellon just to the south is a good anchorage as long as there's no east in the wind. Good beach, good pub.

You need a good pilot book.

I must apologise for mentioning, again, The South England Pilot - Start Point to Lands End by Robin Brandon. In most respects it is 30 years out of date but it's listing, and chartlets, of little known anchorages is superb.

Consider the miserable stipend you are meted out in a pilot of the usual sort. Brandon in his majesty lists over 130 stopping places between Beer and Lands End. And that does not include those, in places such as Salcombe, Plymouth and Falmouth, situated on estuaries.

I was in Falmouth this afternoon and spied a copy of this inestimable volume, available for ten quid. PM me if you would like to know where to find it.

As Dylan says, Coverack is one of our "usuals", normally a good starting point for a night passage to the IoS if tides around the Lizard dictate so. But also a great day trip.

Another place we "discovered" last Easter is Porthallow, just East of St Anthony's. In the right conditions, it is quite protected and you can go for a nice walk over the hill (cafes etc along the way). Ice cream, pub and food in the village by the beach. Good holding on sand.
