I'm tasked with organising our annual Grumpy Old Farts weekend in the Solent weekend of 7-9 May. Given that we should probably avoid the gathering at Mercury, I'm hoping for some help with an itinerary.

5 males all approaching (or beyond) 50, 3 of us met doing YM theory back in '81. No 4 tricked into sailing across Biscay way back (thought we were going to France), No 5 professional boat repairer (handy, eh?). All in danger of early demise through sclerosis, one or two believed in danger of ganja poisoning.

Current thoughts leave Northney around 4pm Friday 7th and head for Cowes, then Lymington/Yarmouth Sat and finally round the back of the Island Sunday. Could do with a bit more sailing Saturday so might do pack in some grumpy spinnaker work.

Any better ideas? Anyone have Portsmouth tides to hand, I believe HW around 1600 7th May?

It's another possibility, though I do wish they would sort out the grub at the Master Builders. It wasn't good the last couple of visits. GOF's don't generally do a lot of galley work, but we do have 2 good cooks amongst us.

If we do, I'll call by the chandlery and say hello.

The potential of the Master Builder (Yachtsmans' Bar) is tragically under exploited, we find the food to be ok, but over expensive and not what you are really hankering for after a good sail. Despite the history of the building there is usually so little atmosphere in the place that you could train astronauts! With a bit of menu tweaking, a bit of smile training for the staff and some suitable live music at the weekend the place could be packed.

Agree, the MB could learn a bit from a visit to the Folly.

Will do. When we sail, we are all more or less experienced so we like to think of it as a joint venture...

They could organise a game of yacht snooker. Picture the scene man! Stash a bunch of boats in the Solent with the aim of seeing how many hits they can make to score. They could all bong against each other, toking turns, while the others Zig Zag (or Rizla in UK terminology) trying to avoid anything getting busted. They could all really catch a buzz with a game like this. Some could go far out, many would hang out close to shore, others would hooka right and disappear out of sight.
