Didn't you ask to see it before you bought the boat?

I dont think its necessarily an issue , how old is she & were the previous owners private individuals, did you buy through a broker

Over 20 years old, yes individuals and yes through broker.. Im sure it will all be sorted, just frustrated as had to cancel lift in and moving her.

And the original vendor would have only had a requirement to keep records for six years, even if they're still a going concern... :)

Will give them the weekend, they say that have it, so we shall see.

PVB, no we didnt see it before offering on the boat, its the first big boat bought... its opened our eyes! The last boat i bought was a laser, gave the guy 2k cash, and drove away with it on a trailer.... big boats, different game entirely! Will know more for next time.

OK, learning curve, we've all been there!

I can't see why you need a 20+year old VAT invoice - what benefit do you think it bestows on you? Just add a clause to the sales contract making the vendor responsible for any VAT liability though I cannot imagine any circumstances where that might arise, assuming always the boat has been in the EC for most of its life and the vendor is an EC citizen.

If you really care, about half an hour with computer and printer can give you any document you want.

If it is a Moody then ring Princess Yachts in Plymouth where it was built. If they finished it there then they will be able to provide a copy of the original invoice. If,like mine, it was finished at Swanwick then hard luck as they haven't got the old records.

Don't worry about it. I don't have one and I know lots of owners with no vat receipt. Ever heard of anyone being dragged through the courts for losing one?
IMHO if customs and excise wanted this kind of documentation they should have kept their own database.
