GRP Repairs

I had a bit of a collision last weekend and now have a chunk removed or maybe a hole abut a foot above the waterline on the bow.

I am in Chichester and wonder if anyone can suggest a couple of repairers who would quote to repair - with damage to other boat - I expect it will be an insurance job.

Because a personal recommendation from someone local is far more useful.

I know there's lots of technophobic old blokes on here, but most of them have at least figured out that Google exists, and don't need to be reminded.

Afraid the only outfit I'm familiar with are Desty's on the Hamble, who aren't really local, but they are very good. They made an invisible repair to Ariam's topsides, including respraying the Awlgrip paint, after some numpty managed to put his anchor roller through almost the whole thickness of the hull layup.

Your Insurance companies obviously allow you a lot more discretion than we are given in Australia.

When damage is to be claimed on an insurance policy the Insurance company nominates who the repairer will be. If we get quotes and have the damage repaired by our repairer the Insurance company may not pay out the full amount and in the event of faulty work they won't want to know about it.

Usually the opposite here. My insurer clearly states that the repair contract is between the owner and the repairer. The insurer may instruct a surveyor to assess the damage. Then the normal process is to obtain quotations and submit to the insurer, who may then either accept it or instruct a loss adjuster if they have concerns about the nature of the claim and proposed repairs.

Once the repair has been completed and accepted the insurer pays.

Try the guy (Mickey I think?) who works via Emsworth Yacht Harbour Chandlery - I'd recommend him wholeheartedly - contact him via the chandlery, but he may well ask if you can get the boat to him....
