So what do they use now? It was an A7 in my uncle's car when I was his bouncer, back in the late 60s.

Went onto Imp engines (up to about 1200cc). Then Triumph Acclaim (Honda) and Peugeots (around the 1340cc size). I have just sold the 1040cc Imp engine and have put a 1600cc Suzuki engine in. Suzuki and Honda are favourites at the moment. Hondas turn "backwards" so need their own gearbox or a Hewland box in the diff. 1650cc is the biggest engine you can use.

The South East trials club is still part of the 750 Motor Club. (sorry about non-boaty info, the OP is certainly a boaty technique question)

Looks fantastic. Is that flocoat on top? How well does it blend in with the original gelcoat?

It is indistinguishable. Look at where the old instrument holes have been filled in too.
