Looking to replace 2 GRP (or possibly plastic) cave type lockers in the coaming of our Tiger 25 - I know that Sheraton do a Yacht Tidy that comes with a teak front but that would rather show up the rest of the boat (!) and also I am trying to reduce maintenance.

Anyone have any ideas on possible suppliers?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike. A man fitting out a motorcruiser in the boatyard I used to infest back in Sussex, bought 90% of his galley lockers, including some ready made cave lockers, cup racks etc: from a Camper van conversion company. I recall a lot of that was preformed plastic or fibre glass construction. Just a thought if you draw a blank elsewhere.

I remember those lockers on a Westerly Tiger - They were great for cockpit storage - Binoculars, torches etc. and hardly ever found on more modern boats.

What exactly is wrong with the ones you have? Are they just cracked? Perhaps they could be removed, reinforced from behind and then the gelcoat touched up on the inside.

Or could they be used to make a mould from which new ones could be fabricated. It would be good practice at GRP fabrication - and much simpler than trying to learn by building a whole dinghy.

Lockers

Thanks, everyone. I knew you would come up with some sound ideas.

The current ones are chipped around the top edges which looks unsightly and in relation to one of them some now redundant electrics were installed leaving holes.

There is also a redundant and defunct VHF speaker which is set into the coamings which I would like to remove and replace with a locker to use the space.

I could mend and remould but SWMBO has suggested we go sailing rather than spend more time on restoration and I think I agree after the winter we have just had! Perhaps when I have the old ones out I should make some moulds from them and start selling on eBay!!

Thanks again,

Regarding the defunct speaker aperture, perhaps you could fit one of those Holt Buoyancy tank screw-in hatches, about 6" dia. A plastic box inside would make a fine waterproof access for keys binocs etc. Though Holts are no more, I expect chandleries like Force 4 will have them in stock.
I have fitted one on the cockpit sole of my Tiger, close to the rudder stock position, to inspect the bearing seal, and tube bolts and nuts, having had a major influx of water from the lower bearing. I don't have to take the fuel tank out to check now!

Are there 2 Galadriels on the forum?

Yes that is an option and I have one of those inspection hatch jobs kicking around somewhere from a previouss project (note to self - when searching for a replacement boat avoid the word "project" in the advert...)

However your cockpit sole inspection use sounds a good idea and has been added to the "to do list"
