I was reading something about the USCG having a group call MMSI for all their ships and another for their shore stations.
Thought this was useful if you wanted to summon help or notify them in US waters but didnt know specifics.

The website also said that US Authorities allowed boaters to make their own group IDs for regattas, boat clubs etc.

How do the UK deal with group ID allocation and do any forum readers make use of them ?

Group calls are set up in the UK just like they are done everywhere else. To create a group call follow the instructions in your manual.

I've used them when cruising in company, an easy way to get a group of boats to communicate with each other. Usually to order me a couple of pints as we are last back and I HATE cold beer.

My manual says to use the same country code as your own MMSI and then make up the rest at random. I'm fairly sure Ofcom would not approve of this.

My club has been allocated a group mmsi by ofcom, and we encourage members to put it into their sets before rallies. It saves them having to maintain dual watch on the designated channel if they wish to receive rally related broadcasts.

We have had no men from the ministry arrive at the club door. The odd vicar I grant you, but he is lovely.
