Grotty or Snotty?

So are you a Grooty Yachty or a Snotty Yachty?

Me, well I guess I'm a grotty yachty, as long as it works it sails. Seldom polish always clean, sort of tidy, thats the boat not me!

I'll talk to anyone, help anyone, and don't care what you own or do for a living, I wish I had money, lots of it but I don't and bob along just nicely. I have friends all over the world and enjoy the company of others rich or poor.

I don't know what makes a snotty yachty, but I'm not one, maybe you are?
 
I'm a snotty yachty.

I spend the whole time polishing and cleaning my boat and never sail it in case that gets messy.

I have friends only in my street who earn precisely what I do, and don't like them anyway.

I put barbed wire on my pontoon.

I guess the trouble with your description of yourself is that nobody would ever want to be the opposite. At least I really hope not.

definitely grotty.

much the same as you. Cleanish and tidy, but not polished. All the gear but none of it works. No matching outfits and hotchpotch of ski-wear, hiking gear and sailing garb. Still using all the crockery and cutlery (c.1985 brass and wooden handles) that were inherited with the boat.

I do have a cocktail cabinet and six matching glasses though! :D

And four matching mugs.

And two of my saucepans are the same colour. :p

Hi, First Mate and I are fortunate to own a very nice and fairly expensive boat. We had a very senior moment but dont regret it at all. We are definatly Grotties. We found a change of mooring from Hamble to Gosport much to our liking. My sailing wear is usually a pair of quick drying trousers topped off with a shirt and a disreputable ex French Police wool jersey, with the cuffs all ragged and holes here and there. I am not one for sartorial elegance! First mate is very practical, but cannot wear wool. She has a couple of favourite fleece's which work well for her. They are not in the same league as my jersey for tattyness though. We seem to rub along OK with most other boat people-with the odd exception-I wonder if they are Snotties?........
 
What a boring world it would be if there were only two choices of yachtsman to be.

Me I take pride in our yacht and everything works on her. I help others to moor, lend out tools and spares, will stop for a chat if I have the time and will invite neighbours on board for a drink if the haven't taken chunks out if my topsides on the way in. I don't suffer fools very well, so basic seamanship would be appreciated.

It doesn't make me Grotty, neither does it make me Snotty.

The Snotty is extinct.

The Snotty required a Yacht Club in order to function and Yacht Clubs have been marginalised by the rise of marinas.

They have been replaced by the Flashy.

I preferred the Snotty, on the whole; whilst they were extremely defensive of their territory (Yacht Clubs, moorings, Commitees and starting lines) they tended to keep themselves within those bounds, and if forced outside them they were normally very polite.

The Flashy on the other hand starts fights over marina hoses, plays loud music, motors too fast and creates wash and generally obtrudes into your space.

I speak of course as a Grotty, subspecies Wooden Boat Owner.

We've got a little 12V B&D vacuum (mainly for the ease of removing crumbs from down the back of the upholstery after the children have been midnight feasting) but also handy for keeping bedding dry and mould-free in vacuum bags.

These http://www.powerkiteshop.com/x3_kite_compression_kit.htm might also be handy if you use a dinghy pump.

We sail a catamaran, anchor when we can, try not to pay mooring fees, play loud rock music when we are up the creek, drink too much and maintain the boat as well as we can on a limited income.
So we are definitely grotties, not loved by marinas, and sadly, by some sections of the sailing community, but we enjoy our sailing, the boat is as good as we can make it, and we welcome visitors aboard, just bring a bottle!!!
