The SSR doesn't give a tonnage figure and many foreign customs forms ask for one so I too put down the displacement. No one has ever queried it.

Summer and winter means storms or not hence different drafts. But knowing ones GT is important when wearing a blue ensign, big fines from Her Maj if you aren't big enough!

The Op has probably found the answer to his question sometime in the 12 years since he asked it!

Then wouldn't it be good for everyone else who asks the same question and finds them self here like I did to have an answer too? You'd be amazed at how many people ask the same questions over and over through the decades. Also, and I'm sure you've experienced it too, someone asks a question but never gets a direct reply in these places, just alternative advice on a ' better way' to do whatever it is, maddening!!! So now hopefully in another 12 years time when someone wants to know what's the point of GT they will know, thanks to me! You're never too old to learn.

It would be interesting to know what question you are claiming to answer, plus an explanation as to why knowing the GT of your boat has any connection with a blue ensign.

AFAIR the relevant rules state a minimum Length of 7m, but no mention of tonnage. As an example the Ajax class (23ft) at my club were entitled to wear the blue, but the One Designs (20 ft) were not.

Exactly. I was hoping the poster would explain, particularly given the odd tone of his post#24 as he seems to claim it is only he who knows the meaning of GT. Odd as there have been several detailed replies earlier in the thread.

According to the RYA's on line Flag Etiquette Book, C4/01, :

b. Measurement.
The Yacht must have either a gross tonnage of at least 2GT or a length
overall of at least 7m.
