This shows that he is a member of the elite rather than somebody who walks to their battle.

Steady Talbot this could unleash something that makes the Raggie/Mobo debate look like a kindergarten tea party!!!

...and there is another one:
RNR = seamen but not gentlemen
RNVR = gentlemen but not seamen, and finally
RN = neither
Glad I have R Signals after my name!

A good friend of mine, I remember him when at school, he left at just 15, with no exams and went to work in a fruit & veg business; he is now a Capt. RN doing v. valuable work accepting weapon systems. I, an ex AB rate, gave him a security reference when he was a Fleet Chief and taking a commission. - incredible but true.

RN has a good history of achieving this. I rank very high as one of my life achievements persuading 6 very capable "late achievers" to apply and later be acepted as officers, all of whom went on to do very well.

I bummed a lift beck from St Peter Port in the R Signals Vancouver 34 when she was new after taking part in the Services Offshore Race. The weather deteriorated further than expected, and ended up blowing up to 50 kts. I ended up as one of only 2 helm who were capable of keeping the boat on course and preventing broachs, but I had immense respect for the two senior members onboard, one of whom did all the nav on the way back - not something I really wanted to do. Was a fast crossing!

Much after my time, I guess. Had a similar experience in our old Corps yacht Petasus when we lost battery power after it became flooded. Upon entering Cherbourg at around 2am we were challenged by French officialdom in a launch who called out in broken English,
"Vot about ze navigassion lights, eh?" to which a R Signals pal of mine on the foredeck replied immediately, "Solly, no speaka da Eengleesh". Puzzled Frenchman left, which was what was intended!

It came up with suggestion's, and when I had re-spelt it it came up with 'honor' and not 'honour'! Where owner came from I haven't got a Scoobey!!!

Thank you for saving my embarrassment! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Al

Smart arse /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have been at the same place of work - in one capacity or another - for over 7 years now. I just sign off Will. It's enough to strike fear into the heart of lesser mortals, everyone else knows who I am.

At some time - in the not to distant future - I'll just sign off Mr... (Rtd)

Yours, as ever,

Will

An anti-SD Captain once introduced me (his MEO) to a visiting Admiral as his 'Commissioned Stoker'. I thought it was the nicest compliment he had ever paid me.
