Hi there,

We are John and Claire from Herts, and have just replaced our Shetland 570 with a newer Rio 700, partially because we wanted to sleep aboard with a few refinements, and to get a better view, as the Shetlands freeboard is effectively under water!

We're travelling from Penton Hook to Reading this coming weekend, which will be our longest journey yet, hopefully we shouldn't get too lost as it's straight upstream.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway, we have a lot to get used to; Inboard Diesel as opposed to a 20hp Merc, Power steering (!) and another 8' length.

Lets hope the weather is fine.....

Nice to meet you all anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Then you will be going through Henley while the Music Festival is on, you'll see plenty of boats and a few forumites en route.
Welcome to the Thames and T&K

The boats called Shamby!

Shoot a flare at me to attract attention.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'll keep my eyes out, but as we're leaving Penton Hook at around 5pm on Saturday, I'm not sure what time Henley will arrive.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Byron is right, if you took a chainsaw to the bathing platform you could carve off a couple hundred quid off the annual license, if it was any bigger you could land a chopper on it!

Hi Shamby

I'm fairly new as well, you must be a neighbour of mine as I live in Boundary Lane WGC!!
I cannot afford a boat yet I'm afraid, mortage, 2 kids and a wife that does not like boats much. I worked for Kris Cruisers for 10 years so know the Thames fairly well which why I browse on here every now and then.

I'll be even closer in a few days, as we move to the end of Layton St..... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

That bathing platform was not always fitted to the Rio, and the factory quote different lengths, so I may have accidentally quoted the lesser of the two choices when registering it and mooring her..... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I may plant a few bushes and turf it yet..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well according to the huge expensive book on boating I just bought, the length is either measured at the waterline, or higher up, but always in a horizontal plane, as opposed to taking both the upper AND lower sticky out bits.

So I quoted the manufacturers figures, and the EA concurred.

It was previously registered as 7 metres too!

Don't think marinas can have read that book then! Charges for marina berths are invariably based on overall length rather than waterline length so your platform would definitely get measured if you ever need to become marina based.

Byron isn't exactly Big Brother is he?
