Hello there,

I have rather disgusting green marks on my rolled up genoa, loks like some kind of microscopic algae or something similar. I could say it was like that when I bought the yacht, but must admit I am the only one to blame...

Does anyone out there have experience in removing that kind of stains?

Genoa is cruising grade Dacron, nothing fancy or high tech.
Already tried liquid all purpose bio soap, which does wonders on th hull and deck but no success on sails, be it with a brush or an abrasive (green) sponge. Fire or buying a new sail are no options.

Thanks a lot,

Cheers, Alexis

Household bleach (hypochlorite based) is fine on dacron/polyester. Use it in the same quantities and method (including rinse) as recommended on the container for clothes.

It will both kill the algae and remove the stains. If your bath or whatever is not big enuff, then sponge it on refreshing as required. If find need to brush to get any thicker algae material off be careful with just a soft brush so that you don't damage the filler in the cloth.

If your sail has a foam luff insert then it can be hard removing algae out of that without grey marks left behind in the foam. Similarly if the sail has been glued with contact adhesive along the seam lines, the adhesive seems to get permanently marked. In both cases tends to only show when light behind the sail.

The above is the recommended method for polyester - and for those who jump in with all sorts of dire warnings that cats don't know what they are talking about they can amuse themselves by reading the advice at http://www.northsailsod.com/faqs/faq-general.html, is about 1/3 the way down the page /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
