I went down to the boat 3 weeks ago and brewed up a potion of 20 gallons of diesel with a litre (or two, can't r eremeber, any it was double dose and fearsomely expsnive at 40 quid ish) of soltron - enought to treat (ie chuck into the tanks) containing the 2000 litres of suspiciously dodgy fuel which last season blocked the filters on the way to menorca, then again near marseille, and again on the way to italy in november (with coliholic and B1), and again on the way back from italy (with longjohnsilver and shortjohnsilver). Servicing time so changed the papaer and canister filters. I now i shd have filled tthe tanks over the winter but with crap diesel that i might otherwise have had to suck out, why bother adding good fuel to bad over winter?

Anyway two days later we blammed around a bit for a couple of weeks, only thirty miles down the coast, then back, and somewhere else, ran the gennies for bout 20 hours total using only bout 700 litres of the fuel and had no problems. I had a look at one of the filters and and it was clean, as before, no gloop came through. The engines smoked, but only a bit.

Soo, either

1) the nasty gloop was limited and has been taken away with the filters, even though it loitered in a 1/3 of a tank of fuel over winter and somehow stoped the engines at end of last season.

Or,

2) the primary filter of five in line (strainer, primary, second primary, paper then canister) whcih I looked at was being bypassed, not sure of the valves, see. And I haven't run it long enough to recreate the problem as the fuel starvation has only happened after a long run, of two hours plus.

Or,

3) the fuel starvation is mostly due to the lunatic number of filters, not lurgy fuel - I note that the fuel starvation didn't stop me flashing up the (diesel) generator to run the aircompressor with ljs, for example. But neither has it reappeared on the main motors.

Or

4) the blimmin soltron worked? A bit? Doesn't go any faster though. i am having a massive fillup next week of 4000 litres so that will dilute any soltron i spose. All a bit inconclusive. Other than of course the soltron didn't do any harm. Should i look for a supplier of crappy diesel to run the test again?

Everyone with massively dodgy fuel should load it into drums and have it shipped to you.

Dump it all in your tank and leave to fester for a few weeks in Med sun. Take boat for good run and see if you have any problems. Then dose with Soltron

Not scientific, but I'd be interested to see what happens!

John, Matt, Name in brackets(but ex yorkshire so i'm not cockney tho kids are) whatever. Not really a conclusive test, was it. Regardless of what you were using. If you had tanks full of crap last season, and we all read the story, which incidently I enjoyed, changing the filters would have given a brief respite with or without additives anyhow. If the gloop was that bad and no treatment administered, then the problem would have/will reoccurred at some point. To add soltron and expect a miracle under these conditions is hardly a constructive test. I would say that if your tanks are low enough, have them cleaned and start afresh adding Soltron or additive of choice and compare with results acheived prior to all the problems. Only then can you state whether things have improved, i.e speed & smoke etc
All IMHO

Test seems pretty conclusive to me. You can bet that if no Soltron had been added then blockage would most definitely have re-occured, as problem would get worse not better.

You didn`t state whether or not it was lumpy when you first had the problem. if so you might like to take care next time it gets that way ( problem may occur, but I doubt it!) Fill her up and forget it! :o)) I would be interested to hear how you get on.

Sorry about that. It's a reference to the book "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr Suess, in which the main character is repeatedly offered the dreaded meal but he protests that he does not like green eggs and ham, until the end of the book when he does try them and finds that they are okay. I can recommend the book at least, try the library or a bookshop.

Welcome Back TCM

Welcome back Matt, I think I represent all on here when I say we've missed your wit etc around here.

It's all been too polarised on here lately resulting in one of the seven dwarfs being sent to coventry for a while. Need the regulars back to inject some life again.

Sounds like you have had a conversion on the road to Damascus re Solly. More annecdotal evidence to fuel Dom's arguments. I spose there comes a point where so much annecdotal evidence becomes fact ??? You should get a FULL refund though cos it didn't give you 5 knots extra speed.

Sounds like bloody good gear to me, but in the interests of exploring the limits of it's effectivness I shall add it to the contents of my porta-potti, give good stir and then run my raggies auxiliary on the resultant soup. I had a pretty good vindaloo last night and expect the calorific value of my new fuel to be quite high. Water skis anyone????? Cheers, Mick.

Yep! But think of the possibilities, An end to war 'n' all sorts, No more fuel crisis, blimey I'd better start my Nobel acceptance speech, that and make room on the mantle piece for the trophy. Course we couldn't be Yotties & Stinkies anymore as I think we'd all be Stinkies, at least, once we started up :-) Cheers, Mike.

Porta potty fuel

ok, let's run with this one for a llittle while - how exactly will a porta potty full of poo help the war in northern ireland or israel/palestine. I think you should hold back on the acceptance speech for a little while longer /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Porta potty fuel

We had a porta potty in our last boat last year. We took boat out the water in October last year When i sold it last month iwas clearing everything out the boat when i thought i'd check the potty, MY GAWD!!!! The wife had used it last year had not told me, pi##, sh##e the whole lot. I have to say though the chemicals did a decent job of trying to break it up. DOH!!!!

Enough to sink an Armada..

Cheers..

Re: Porta potty fuel

Some recent posts seem to attribute latest kerfuffle in Iraq to overwealming interest in obtaining someone elses oil. Therefore alternative energy source to oil has to be an aid to world peace, :-) Logical innit? Cheers, Mick. Can I go back to the acceptance speech now please??

Re: Porta potty fuel

Have you decided what to wear when you accept your trophy ?

Re: Porta potty fuel

Ah, so you accept that my least likely method of getting rich 'n' famous might actually stand a chance of success? as to what I shall be wearing I haven't got past the first 45 paragraphs of my acceptance speech yet. there is also the small matter of the 10% commision I should receive from the manufacturers of Pattacks Vindaloo paste & the manufacturers of soltron should the results prove favourable, perhaps a soltron flavour curry might have possibilities. (It would save on packaging thus helping save the rain forests as well) :-) Cheers, Mike.

Allas, I fear you may have a point there, Take care, I shall return to the raggie pages where my eccentricities are less noticable. :-) Cheers Mike.
