Green Card?

Don't think it purely an insurance issue but a legal one.

Of course you have to allow that all "rules" in Portugal can get a local interpretation!

The incident i posted though actually happened. We park our Fiat 500 at a friend's house when away rather than leave it at marina. They are aware of this incident and they refuse to use our Fiat once they know we are physically out of the country - even when their car broke down!

Just discussed this with a local who confirms even a spouse technically needs letter of authority to drive the car if she's not noted on registration document - my wife's name was added to ours some years ago. He isn't aware of any restriction on owner having to be in the country and he worked in Angola for long periods while his wife had the car which is in his name, at home.

Just as a non-update, from the foregoing posts and links (thanks) there appear to be differences in the way that the Green Card situation is viewed and operated (I'm obviously thinking particularly about the situation UK-France) .
Is it a necessary requirement, now? (To the best of my knowledge, a G C has not been necessary in the past in France, at least since we first got here in 2003).
Is it automatically given, just for the asking?
Is it time-limited (defined start-finish dates) or does it just document whatever the insurance cover is, for the cover period?
I've put these questions to our insurer and I'll post whatever they come back with. In the meantime, as of tomorrow, we're driving particularly carefully.

Having applied for a green card online on Tuesday, it's arrived in the post this morning! Well done LV= (y)

And, it includes both our names, not just the main driver! Excellent.
