Greek sun sail flotilla q's

I was on a share a boat in the Sporades a while ago, if you have any experience you will not be the least experienced. Some folk will have had loads though and I think that says lots, flotillas are fun and folks come back.

About rats, they may be a problem, one of the boats on the flotilla I was on got one and when we rafted up they became "the plague boat" so it stayed put. Of 10 boats only one got infested and we were all together, I would imagine it could easily spoil your holiday though even if you do get moved onto a much bigger boat for your last night at the base.

We caught one in a cage trap. every time we went near to the trap it tried to leap into our faces, extremely aggressive things. It even chewed it tail off as this is what was holding it in the trap.
Keep away from them.:(

Rat problem is being blown out of all proportion here, yes there are rats but they don't like you any more than you like them, they much prefer to frequent the dumpsters (dustbins) the quay cats do a great job of keeping them under control, dont worry chill enjoy your sailing ;)

I have never heard such tripe, there are of course rats, but just like any fishermans tale, they was this big, it all gets blown out of all proportion.
There are NO foxes on the Ionian islands that I know of, also No rabbits, only tame escaped ones, there are plenty of Hares however. The biggest killers of rats are montpelier snakes, the Beech Martens will kill rats if they are hungry, so will the Buzzards, chill out and enjoy.

Having seen and shot dozens if not hundreds of foxes (in Scotland, Europe, Africa and even here in Kuwait) I think I know one when I see it - especially at less than twenty yards. I could not be certain as to the species but would suppose it was a common european red fox, though I suppose it may have been a Ruppels. Foxes are mostly norturnal so its hardly surprising you've never seen one - unless you go looking.

Did the Northern Ionian 2 week cruise a couple of years ago didn't see any rats and had a brilliant time. Got to say though those Quay Cats look hard as nails when you approach the bins :-)

You'll have a brilliant time!! I can't wait to go back one day in my own boat.

Oh you will need cash and don't forget you'll need a deposit for the dinghy if you opt for one.

In five years of cruising the Ionian and the Gulf of Corinth the only rats I have seen were two legged ones and thankfully they are very few and far between in Greece who are a lovely people. Do I detect a wind-up?

Do I detect a wind-up?. OK yes
There are a rats and on occasions big rats,
Only, it was fun in exaggerating the problem to a newbie to Greece on the forum ,no harm done ,just a laugh.

Loverobot sorry it`s a wind- up!!!!!!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are most definitely rats around on Meganisi. From personal experience, they can climb over the coke bottles on the lines. Your best defense is to ensure that there is nothing on deck that will attract the rats. We were boarded by a rat a couple of seasons ago in Abelike Bay on Meganisi, luckily it didn't cause too much damage. We now have feline deterrants and last season we spent a lot of time in Kapali Bay, again on Meganisi, and weren't troubled by rats at all. All the other boats around us had several visits though.

There from 3rd to the tenth of June so week before

Wind up or not it won't spoil the holiday - I will just take a very big pointed stick!

Have just found out my wife is pregnant (!) so she didn't end up doing comp crew - are the flotilla pretty good re taking lines from shoreside? I have just done my day skipper - finished yesterday- and am pretty happy with the boat handling side buT don't want her having to leap ashore - she did manage a couple of days and can helm as long as not strong winds

Also she has asked me to ask about showers etc ashore ? Or is it make with what's inboard ?

Have done the Vounaki flotilla twice and never saw any rats - I also slept in the cockpit a few nights as it was so hot. The last one was in 2005.

Showers are available in many of the Tavernas for a few €.

The lead crew or other flot sailors will always help with the lines etc so don't worry.

Lovely sailing, have a great time!

Stick with what you have on board .As the showers are where the rats live

. Is that the scary two legged kind?! Lol
We have done lots, I found the onboard showers to be good, the calorifier just big enough to supply enough water for 4!
I was always concious of getting water in to the tanks whenever possible! One dildo with us thought it was like on demand, we were in the outer parking spot in Parga before going to Paxos, the water pipe was a dribbler but I made sure we were topped up. When we got to Paxos, v difficult to get water at the time, his family were highly pi ssed off with none left for showers!
Top tip, fill up whenver you get the opportunity!

Just to put the rat problem in perspective.
Rats are endemic in Greece, just as they are in many countries. In London, I am told, you are never more than 6 feet away from a rat.
If you are sensible you will not have a problem. Never, ever, leave food out. Put all food waste in bags and put it in one of the many bins available on land. Always close the bin lid! Be nice to the cats which abound, most are strays and are your best friend at keeping rats away.
Most of all, just relax and enjoy yourself in one of the best sailing areas in the world!

Flippin' 'eck, a sensible answer. We can't have that sort of thing here...can we?

PS. I see you're in the same location as me!

I am a newbie - so I will grovel, I know my place, please accept my apologies.

My new response:

Never mind the rats, they make good sport. Take a high power air rifle with you on holiday or buy one in Greece and you can have hours of fun shooting the little bas***ds in the evening.

John

PS Norman_E Living in Greece I fear your response is too near the truth to be amusing!
