Just reported on CA Forum:

" Inspected by Port Police in Thasso Harbour this evening. Told we must purchase a set of flares before we can leave - but, as our fire extinguishers do not have a "Certificate" showing they are in date we can't stay in the harbour . . . . . . Greek Logic?

They also tried to check the liferaft, but that became too difficult . . ."

Amazing! Sailing around Greek coastal waters with no flares, expired fire extinguishers and no certificate for the life raft. Can't see the problem really! Perhaps the dumb Greeks also realised that almost certainly your insurance cover was also invalidated by the foregoing. Just the sort of edgy cruising that CA should be supporting! What! what!

Check your insurance policy. Doubt it makes any mention of the need to carry any specific safety equipment so the lack of these items would not invalidate your insurance. If the boat is UK registered, private and under 13.7m then there are no mandatory equipment requirements other than the SOLAS requirement for a radar reflector. Although there are laws covering equipment on Greek registered boats, they are not normally applied to foreign registered boats. The point about this report is that the Greek Port Police are inconsistent in the way they perform their duties and can at times use their "powers" in a way that suits them without necessarily having any legal right.

hello there,

Sorry for this incident... The truth is that Greek laws need the existance of all safety equipment certifications up to dated. On the other hand none can forbit the entrance in the harbor! The officers had two options, either to give you a ticket for all expired equipment, or leave you with just a notice if the boat i other than Greek registration... I really cannot see why (and how) you were not allowed to moore!

I hope you had a great time in the Aegean though...

Regards,

Nick
