Does anyone know of any restrictions regarding sailing a greek flagged boat in turkish waters, or indeed a turkish flagged boat sailing in greek waters.

I am researching next years cruise and would like to cover the area around Kos and the Datca peninsula.

I am no way the expert, but you are to check in / check out of each country - obviously involves paperwork and passports and MONEY - only certain towns / marina's can you do this out of and in general is a PITA.

lots of places you can read up on this all.....

There are cultural aspects to this worth mentioning.

The Greeks are known to hate the Turks, under whose boots they lived for a few centuries. The Greeks are inveterately officious bureaucrats who could bureaucratically torture you to death, traipsing into one of their ports wearing a Turkish ensign. On the other hand, there are some Greeks who will go out of their way to break the stereotypes and be friendly.

The Turks are much simpler. They don't bear any ill will towards Greeks and in general are happy to identify foreign tourists of any kind with prosperity and welcome them. The bureaucracy is simpler and, bizzarrely, more efficient, and cheaper. With one exception: there are some areas of the Turkish Aegean with extremely repressive environmental legislation which prohibits the discharge of even grey water, with aggressive enforcement. Be careful.

You do need to keep up a transit log in Turkey but it's not all that burdensome.

The sailing is stupendous so worth whatever hassle.

Depending on how long your cruise is, you might just skip the Greek parts. I cruised those very waters two summers (chartering out of Bodrum) and found more than enough of fabulous interest not to feel any pressing need to cross over to the Greek side.

Clearing in or out of Greece from Turkey is an ordeal which can last more than a day each way. Hardly worth it unless you are spending the whole summer or at least a whole month in the Aegean.

Turkey to Greece

We went on a Flotila to Turkey last year and joked that we may stop off at Simi ( Greek Island ) on the way as we found a decent fish restaurant . The reply is un-printable . Rather expensive by all accounts and you need an agent to sort out the paper work . We did however meet someone in Simi this year who appears to hop back and forward between the two without any problems

Your charter company may not see it that way though .....

Thats the Way I see it.

We too were around Turkey and 'wanted' to call in at Simi -by all accounts a lot of hassle.
Some say 'nah, piece of cake, they never know, what's the problem'

We called into an absolutely stunning bay south of Simi Town with Sheer rock face cliffs for a lunch and swim having done the courtesy flags etc.

I can confirm when the Greek Coastguard boat nosed around the corner in to the bay, stopping here and there at other yachts, some pulling up their anchors - I confess to needing to empty my personal bilges.

Turns out not a problem, but when its not your boat and you don;t know the full lay of the land it is different to the 'regulars' way of thinking.
