Looking at Ionian, West coast of Greece to use with Marine Navigator

Thoughts, suggestions

Thanks

We been using navionics for some years now , it's as good as any of the others , if you looking for paper charts we keep a set of inray although for Greece they not seen light for some years , they kept in case everything chash and for insurance reasons .

The OP asked for charts for Marine Navigator.... As far as I know there are no charts for Greece on this app (but happy to be proved wrong!). I use Navionics for Greece as my Marine Navigator with VMH charts only covered me from the UK to Spain.

In the area of the Ionian there were last year there were only two charted but unmarked submerged rocks.
One of the charter boats managed to hit one of them and many others must have run very close to the other rock while we stayed well clear.
Otherwise very deep water.
Plotter useful for navigating as some ports are well hidden by the topography until you are nearly on them.
Not sure what charts we had but the plotter was Garmin.

I have used Garmin Blue charts and Navionics in Greece for many years. It needs to be remembered that much of Greece has never been surveyed accurately and in some cases the cartographers seem to guess! I know many places where the charts show shallows that do not exist and some unmarked rocks and shallows. I found little difference between the two I have used.

Keep an eye on where you are I have found one headland in Greece is in the wrong position on the chart there may be other errors, Venezuela is the worst for chart errors. many places are half a NM out and there are vrecks on reefs that are wrong on the chart, including a yacht that hit Klein Curacau at night the day before we arrived.

There's much more choice if you swap from Marine Navigator. Navionics are good and cheap for a tablet. I don't know if they will run on plotters. Good point from Vyv on accuracy although this isn't limited to Navionics, or Greece, or electronic charts in general.

Thanks for that. Suppose I will end up with Navionics for Greece.

Just hoped there was some way of not paying Navionics for a few weeks use.

For a short use, I think Navionics give a 2 week free trial. In addition, you could download loads of screen shots from their free web site and combine it with Google Earth. Or if there are 2 of you, just stagger the free 2 week trial period....

Never seen the 2 week trial option, surely the costs for the charts at around £30 is not that bad

One of my favourite sailing YouTubers uses CPC (CPN?) and open source free charts. Personally I wouldn't use them as I suspect the charts may not be updated and there's no quality guarantee. I have an aversion to running into unknown obstructions and think it's worth paying a small sum for charts of guaranteed quality (although I accept that some errors will always exist).
