As you are setting off from Corfu I will assume that you know many of the delightful spots in the Ionian.
Mesolongi on the Greek mainland is worth a visit and makes a convenient overnight stop before entering the Gulf of Corinth.
The narrows between Rion and Anti Rion on the western entrance to the gulf is best sailed before midday or after about 18:00 as the afternoon winds frequently reach gale force.
Spare the time to cruise the northern shores of the gulf. The small island of Trizonia is well worth a visit. There is one of the many unfinished marinas there with free, safe mooring.
Galaxhidion is also worth a visit. In settled weather it is a good place to leave your boat and take a bus to visit Delphi (change at Itea).
You can save yourself some money by ensuring that you go through the Corinth Canal during normal working hours. When we last went through there was a surcharge of 25% for nights and another 30% for weekends and holidays.
The Aegean was very windy last year in late September and for much of October so you may need to change plans accordingly.
Tinos is a pleasant island and has excellent shelter from Northerly winds. Rinia has a small, sheltered but remote cove on its southern shore. Amorgos is well worth a visit - fewer tourists than many of the islands. The small island of Pserimos buzzes with day trippers until 17:00 then its all yours - in settled weather you can anchor off the beach then move to the quay when the day boats leave.
If the Aegean is very windy when you leave the canal then I would spend some time around Aegina and Poros where the winds are usually lighter.
Do stop in Meganisi and Kioni/Ithaca on your way through the Ionian.
Watch out for v strong winds in the Aegean at that time of year.
Stop in Poros after leaving the canal - it's a great place to unwind and prepare for the Aegean.
Happy sailing!
May I join this thread with my own request for info?
Where would you recommend in Greece for 1st 2 weeks in Sept where I am likely to get enough wind to sail but not so much as I will need to reef!
SWMBO not keen on yet more sailing on holiday but might just be able to persuade her if we get lucky with weather.
You run the risk of getting seriously strong winds in the Aegean, so, for my money, I would go to the Ionian, The Saronic Gulf, or the Sporades (Skiathos and thereabouts).
If you go to the Ionaian then suggest that you charter from somewhere near Lefkas - Sunsail are based nearby, also Neilson.
If the Saronic, then you will probably charter from Athens and there are many sheltered harbours and anchorages within easy distances from each other.
The Sporades are very attractive, being "greener" than the Aegean islands and set to the west of where the meltemi blows the hardest.
All good crusing grounds, but you still may need to reef!
We took a Discovery 30 out of Gouvia early last September with
corfuyachting.com. Unusually it blew Easterly 6 - 7, was freezing
cold, raining and there was a nasty chop. As novices we were
quickly back in the marina. The wind remained a couple of days
and we were too wary to venture out again. Ashore it was so gusty
that restaurant tables were upturning and you could see gusts
sweeping across the sea at incredible speeds. Several yachts were
"trapped" in Kassiopi. I have no idea whether this happens every
year though.

Stick to the Ionian where the winds are more gentle, chartering out of Levkas town or Nidri as this is the most protected, and the most beautiful part. It also has hundreds of safe anchorages/ports to frequent if the weather gets up - most of which are within a few miles of each other. Meganisi has so many safe bays that it is possible to be sheltered wherever the wind is coming from.
Watch out for the harbours on the east side of Itahaca - they are severely affected by the swell from the large ferries heading for Piraeus. But they are, nevertheless, well worth a visit.
BTW I spent the whole of June in the Ionian and used the large format pilot by ND Elias - it is packed with excellent local detail, albeit a little hard to get used to.
steve : Beneteau First 42f7 chartered from Veronicos, booked through Latesail, 31/8 to 14/9. Just bought new Heikel. Would like to visit Athens, but Heikel is v. discouraging about the local marinas. Perhaps there is a Veronicos base nearby (not had chance to check yet). Or maybe get into a harbour some distance off, and visit Athens by ferry. Or maybe there are better things to do with a yacht. Crew = wife (competent) + 4 teenagers ranging from competent to stowaway. As a family, we have been chartering together for about 8 years, totalling about 6,500 NM. Thanks, HONSEC
