Friend of mine needs to drive from the UK to Northern Cyprus, he thinks he can get to Patras [Greece ] ok but is then stumped, seems that ferries onward only run in the summer, he wants to go next month, any ideas??
Unless there has been a distinct thawing in relations there is no direct access from Greece to Northern Cyprus and the only way in used to be via Turkish mainland.
The Greeks also used to be very funny if they found a N Cyprus stamp in your passport when entering Greece. Whatever the outcome I would suggest your friend researches this very carefully as if got wrong it could result in many probs. You must have heard what the Greeks are like when the C word in mentioned????
I believe you can now visit North Cyprus from Greek Cyprus for more than one day.
But whether you can do this in a Brit car needs checking.
Car ferry from Athens to ?Limassol is not going to be cheap.
Does he really need to take his own car? Hiring there when necessary may be cheaper.
What would be your reaction if someone called "Northern Cyprus" the Turkish army occupied territory of the Republc of Cyprus? For those of you that don't know or don't remember, "Northern Cyprus" is the result of Turkey's invasion to the island that created among others 200,000 missing(!!!) persons.
Mind you, the Greeks (including me) are very hostile to the Brits who (after dividing the people as they use(d?) to do and creating the problem) now go to the occupied territory and buy stolen (looted) Cypriot property.
BTW, there is no such thing as "Northern Cyprus". The so-called republic of nothern Cyprus is only recognised by (surprise-surprise) Turkey. Not the UN or the EU or any other country recognises this thing. The Security Council of the UN has asked many times from Turkey to withdraw it's troops - currrently 35,000, but I think you may guess what Turkeys reaction was.
De facto recognising the occupation of the Northen part of the Republic of Cyprus is a hostile act against Cyprus and Greece. As simple as that /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I did this some years ago, but to the Republic, not the occupied North.
From Patras I drove across the Peloponnisos and over the Corinth Canal to Pireas. From there ferry to Limassol via Rhodes. This was in March and the ferry was pretty quiet.
The procedure for driving from the Republic into the North is much more relaxed now with a new border crossing to the West of Nicosia. The Ledra Palace crossing in the city got too busy once restrictions on crossing were eased a couple of years ago.
I would urge your friend to check on whether he will be able to take a Brit registered car over and more especially, return via this route. The last time I crossed in October was in a Cypriot registered car and I was given to understand it is not possible in a hire car, so....
There are still passport controls and, more significantly, no one can cross without buying special visitor insurance as most policies are not valid in the North. Ironically the policies are sold in booths on the Republic side.
On the whole, and unless there are very important factors in favour of taking a car across, its not worth the hassle. If your friend is a Brit. he will be able to buy a car in Cyprus duty free a lot cheaper than he would get the same model in the UK.
