Greece, Kefalonia earthquake

A period of earthquakes, lasting about a week so far, has damaged around 1,000 buildings around Lixouri, the port just 5km NW of Argostoli. Lixouri quay has been badly damaged, and around six sailboats laid up ashore there have been toppled. Peak shocks were about 6.1 on Jan 26th, with a couple more shocks around 5.6 and 5.7 a week later. Temporary accommodation (tents and pre-fab buildings) will house those whose properties have been affected. Water supplies have been affected.

I've found no reports of effects beyond S Kefalonia yet, but residents (mindful of the dreadful quakes of 1953) are nervous that further shocks may occur.

Can anyone confirm that boats ashore in Levkas and other yards in the area haven't been affected?

Hi Jim, as you probably know I live on Kefalonia, I had just started the drive back across Europe when the quakes hit. I have friends updating me and sending piccies, but I am on a PAYG dongle, so not quick. I have seen piccies of yachts fallen over at Lixouri, I will try and post or find a link later.

By the way, anyone who has left a yacht on the hardstanding at Poros,Kefalonia, with the Genoa furled, it is now shredded to bits, you need a new one.

That's a sad sight.

The quakes have been felt all the way up here in Corfu, though not strong enough to cause any issues.

look at this site and you will be alarmed at what we are experiencing every day
most of the tremors are going on across the Paliki peninsular / Lixouri area
there are 2 big ferries moored on the cruise ship pier ,
where local people are being looked after as thier homes are wrecked or unsafe .
the Government has declared Kefalonia a natural disaster area and have sent the Army in to help with machinery personnel and supplies .

yesterday I counted 28 tremors in the 24 hours !
today has been quiter and we are all hoping the situation is calming down .

There hasn't been any damage to boats or property reported in Lefkas or Aktio, as far as I'm aware (we're in Lefkas Marina).

Apparently ok in Aktio, my yard seems it's usual casual self!

It looks really awful. How strange that this has gone completely unreported in the UK media - or have I missed something.

Hopefully, the worst is over but it must be a terrifying experience for the people on the island.

I think our media is rather preoccupied with Berkshire, Surrey and Oxfordshire being underwater. Terrible for Greece; the last thing that they needed at this moment.

If you live in Greece you get used to it cause it will happen sooner or later.You also get used to the idea that no one from the state is going to help you and you try to go on living.God forbid that you get such a devastation as it happened this time or last time in Athens or Ilia or Kalamata or Thessaloniki etc.You see Earthquakes in Greece is like flooding in GB -you know it will happen but you wish it won't happen in your area.And how about when it strikes while you are aboard and it feels like you've run aground?
