Greece charter in October

We're considering a weeks charter in Greece with the children during the October school holidays (15-24th). What is the weather likely to be like at that time of the year - is it a bit late in the season? We're used to sailing in the Clyde in the wet and cold, but are looking for a change!

Anyone making weather predictions in the modern era is asking for trouble! We have had wonderful weather in that particular week but in another year on the same week we packed up and came home early. There tend to be more thunderstorms in October in the Ionian but you could miss them entirely. The water temperature is superb for swimming. Air temperature is quite likely to be very pleasant.

It is unpredictable, although I used to go to Corfu regularly in October, but usually the week before half term and most years it was fine. however, after a few years' break went last year and although weather was good, was surprised how much was closed down. People there in the business said it had been getting less and less busy and most were closing earlier. The only people still busy seem to be Sailing Holidays with family orientated flotillas.

I'd echo what Tranona says. Weather - you may stirred lucky and it'll be scorching, you may not and it'll be wet and windy. Tavernas: many will have shut up shop for the winter but there would be enough still running to give some choice. In comparison to the Clyde though it'll be like paradise. We might still be out there this year, especially if the weather remains good.

Agree with above posts about the weather (it was a good October last season if I remember correctly but it is a lottery) and that some tavernas may be closed but enough open to make it okay. The other advantage of going at this time of the year is that it is quiet, you can get into most harbours without too much difficulty.

From a weather point of view, Stephen, the 'lateness' of the proposed trip isn't a great issue. The thunderstorm period which regularly arrives in autumn is often over by your proposed dates but, as suggested, historic patterns can no longer be relied on. It's pot luck.

Are you seeking a non-flotilla charter? If so, I'd bone up on thunderstorm holes in your chosen area (partly, perhaps, by asking on here). If you're used to anchoring, that's often safer than town quays. (It certainly was a couple of years ago when many boats in Greece were damaged in violent thunderstorms.) If a flotilla, you should have good local information sailing with you.

Equally, if you'll have internet access, there's the means on-line to get excellent information about the likelihood and real-time trajectory of thunderstorm conditions. Ask if you need the links.
