Australian great white sharks have ended up in the Mediterranean after going "walkabout", a study has shown.

Four of the deadly predators found off the coasts of Turkey, Tunisia and Sicily had DNA that showed they belonged to a family from Down Under.

Scientists believe their ancestors turned up near the popular holiday destinations after making a navigational error. They may then have found themselves trapped in the enclosed sea. """"""

^^^^^ Wrong.

They are marina owners in Majorca.

Saw a shark last fall just north of Ibiza... about 6 miles offshore. Not a great white though:)

Considering there are very few fish left in the Med, the sharks must be hungry enough to eat anything.

I was between the hulls of my Catamaran once scrubbing off the shells when I saw a shark just at the entrance to the "tunnel". I was floating in a sea of scrapped off shellfish when I realised that I was the big worm in a cloud of chum.

Quite a few Australian ones in Finike

There are Great Whites in the Med, not many, just a few.

FACT :~

In the Straits Of Messina there are 34 different species of shark anyway.

Many of these make their way into the Med from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal. Others make their way in from the Atlantic, following the Tunny.

Several years ago, off the coast of Italy, there were two Italian Navy personnel on duty one bright morning in an observation post mounted on a wooden pylon like structure.

To their amazement they saw two Great Whites circle their pylon.

Then they made off into the distance.

One of them returned and charged one of the supports of the pylon, which shook violently, and then was seen to swim away. A few minutes later the carcass of the major part of a cow floated up to the surface at the very spot the Great White had collided with the pylon..Obviously the beast had done it to regurgitate a mouthful it could not handle.

In the Matanza, an annual tunny hunt carried out off Corsica (?) using a huge square net that is progressively reduced, TWO Great Whites were included in the haul.

In Tarifa, (at the entrance to the Med) a young lad who was surfboarding had his foot taken off by a Great White as well.

Off the south coast of France, a diver disappeared whilst diving in 150 feet of water. A search was carried out but nothing found. Several days later an aqualung was washed ashore, the webbing attached to it in tatters.:D

Here, off Europa point a diver also disappeared. His float was found, but nothing else. However, in this last case he was diving in an area of notoriously strong undercurrents, so it may not have been a shark, but just drowning. But a body was never found, despite extensive searching.

A Spanish fisherman told me how several years ago, he came across a dead whale in the Straits. It had been run over by the propellor of a ship. BUT, it had a huge half moon bite that had taken a chunk a metre wide near the tail.

So yes, these beasts are around.
