According to this morning's tabloids on line that is. All I could see on their video was a few splashes and the odd flash of white as a large aquatic creature leapt partly out of the water several times. Is that typical Great White behaviour?

Don't blame us, it was a Yorkshireman who reported and filmed it on his phone! If it had been a Lancashireman he would probably have claimed it as Great Red Shark. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Most likely to have been a mako or a porbeagle as they are both related to the Great White

The thing that worried me in the BBC report is that there are no less than thirty three species of shark roaming the British Isles - including mako and blue.

Now, there's an incentive not to fall overboard.

Here is a still shot taken from the video:

from Yahoo: "Great White Shark Off UK", holidaymaker Nick Fletcher told The Sun tabloid how he saw "the 12 foot maneater"

Rather like a Force 5 Gale - /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just heard the news on Radio 4, with the guy describing the animal he saw, and I reckon that what he saw may well have been a basking shark.

The description of the breach, i.e. repeated, just clearing the water, rolling over on to its back during the breach, white underside etc seems to confirm that. Basking sharks are, of course, not uncommon off North Cornwall at this time of year, so that would tie-in too.

The basking shark is not too distantly related to the white shark, so shares some of the physical features that allow breaching, and the bulky body shape is not too different, so such a mistaken ID could easily be made.

Who knows though? Stranger things have happened, and if it's in the Sun it must be true....

In 2005, we saw a very large Fin Whale jumping clean out of the sea.

About 10 miles from the Scillies from Padstow.

Fortunately it was quite some way from the boat, 1/2 a mile at least.

Years ago I saw a huge flipper come out of the water a few hundred yards behind me, most likley a whale again. In the same waters around the Scillies.

Not sure whether the Great White would be in these waters, but suspect that that anything is possibel.

White pointers are reasonably common in the Southern ocean. What is interesting though is they do not normally jump clear of the water except off South Africa where that "Blue Planet" bit was filmed.

That is absolutely fabulous! The power of an animal like that! No wonder humans dont stand a chance against something like that.
I never tire of seeing that footage and love the blue planet series, have it onboard on DVD, watch it often, along with the last one, can't remember the name now. Living planet is it?
Living onboard reminds me that this is my home and that is my back garden, I like to look after my back garden and share it with others and it's inhabitants.
I'm not too chuffed about that Mako being killed either! I probably knew him/her as a neighbour! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

a good few years ago, I used to shark fish from looe I have seen a Mako jumo out of the water, estimated by those that knew at about 300lbs,most shark caught were Blues, but a few Makos were caught every season, Porbeagles where mostly caught out of Padstow. this was a Mako
