A few weeks ago, I ordered some fender socks monogrammed with my boat's name from m2m here http://www.m2mfenders.eu/. Thanks to jfm for the link. They were promptly delivered and at a fair price, only when I tried to fit them to the existing fenders on my boat, they were too small. My fault entirely; I'd measured the diameter of my fenders and then (wrongly) assumed they were A3 size. What I didn't realise was that different manufacturers make different lengths of fender with the same diameter.
I explained this to Dudley at m2m and not only did he turn round a 2nd set of fender socks in double quick time so that I would have them for my holiday at the end of this week but he also gave me a discounted price on them to make me feel better about my mistake. You can't ask for better service than that so a big up to Dudley and m2mfenders.
And another thing that Dudley kindly told me. The fenders on my boat are actually manufactured on the island of Solta, not 10nm away from the marina where I moor my boat in Croatia so no more ordering fenders in the UK and humping them to the boat in my luggage:)

If you sew two of the first set together, could you make some rather crafty Speedos, fully emblazened with boat name. Def. one up on the named tender.

I always thought that these sox caused scratch marks on the gelcoat as hold any small particulate matter in the weave.

is that correct 'cos is a very cheap was to spruce up the fenders without the hour long scrub each month - having the boat name and even makers logo is very flash.

You won't find a single professionaly crewed boat in the South of France that doesn't use fender socks. If it is to be believed that they cause scratches then you would use a piece of plastic to polish your boat not a cloth one.

Also you won't find many professionally crewed boats that don't have Lumishore underwater lights :D

I have been using fender socks in the Med for 9 seasons now and I've never seen any scratching on the hull and fenders get a right hammering in the Med because the boats are all squashed together (no finger pontoons). Yup it is a cheap way to spruce up the fenders. Mine are a bit manky but still perfectly serviceable and a set of fender socks, even monogrammed, was about the same cost as 2 new fenders. U/water lights definitely on the menu for winter maintenance list. I have already got 2 of them but they're white only and no self respecting mobo can be seen without multicoloured ones these days:)

The murk of the river Severn would make for an interesting sight under LED's!!

Do you mean that the "wrong" set of socks which are now taking valuable space somewhere on your boat were made for Polyform A3 fenders like these ones? Because if so, I wouldn't mind advertising your boat name for free, if you wish to send them to me! :D

Ah! So by using unsox fenders will clearly differentiate me as an owner/skipper type with no hired assistance :-)

Unsure if that's reverse snob value or not?

Thanks Deleted User - birthday list jobbie I think

It's interesting but clean windows and clean fenders, fender lines / mooring lines make a rough looking boat hugely more eye catching.

No, it means that the professional crews probably know something about the effect with or sans fender sox. I doesn't matter to me if you hang tyres off your boat. You asked if they scratch the hulls, they don't in my oppinion and there are those with more experience that seem to know this as well.

I was looking at the hull of a 30+ hunton on the week end and it had scratches on the hull caused by plastic only fenders. I've yet to see a hull scratched by fender sox, mild polishing is actually what you tend to see on a boat with FS.

:o

Mapism I would gladly send them to you but I made a typo. They are F3 size not A3 and suitable for Polyform fenders 76 x 22cm. I bought some A3 fenders and socks as well, hence my confusion. Do you still want them?

Yes this is a very good point. It could be that if you are seen on a 'professionally crewed' boat with fender socks, everyone will know that you are too poor to own the boat and you are only chartering it:eek:

Ha ha , you are right Mike. If you sit on the quay side in St Tropez pretty much all those yachts are chartered and the people on them want to be seen by all the gawping tourists and the odd pap. The owners tend to sit out in the bay on their yachts away form the madding crowds of tattooed brummies and tender every where . (apologies to brummies but every time i've been to St.Tropez there seems to be a higher than expected number of your kin folk wandering the quay and they are clearly of the poor decision maker clan:eek: looking at tome of the tattoos.)

ROTFL, excellent point Mike.
The next time someone will ask me if I ever considered a newer and better boat, I'll answer that I don't want to risk giving such impression! :D

Many thanks for the socks offer, very kind of you.
I do have also some cylinder fenders which could use new socks, but I don't remeber by heart their size and I can't check it right now.
Will revert asap, anyhow thanks again for the moment.
