WOW that's scary!! thanks for reviving that . It appears that Ebay is flooded with cheap LEDs that probably fall into the dodgy category !! There you have it chaps it appears that in this case you get what you pay for !!

Coincidentally, a customer sent me this lamp which was new and he had installed in a vertical orientation i.e. in a bulkhead fixture. He smelt burning and traced it to a light fixture and found the lamp had got so hot that the solder had melted on the resistors on the rear of the G4 lamp. Fortunately, he was on board when this arose. He was tied up on a pontoon having just connected mains supply and his batteries were charging. For information, I understand that he was using a quality Merlin multi-stage battery charger and was going to be charging for an extended period at 14.8 volts! The lamp is clearly marked 12V and the result is obvious when the elevated voltage was applied.

For boat-owners who still think resistor controlled lamps are OK on boats please think again!
