Great River Race

Anyone going?

With the finish in Richmond may make a nice Sat beerathon...

My wife and son are rowing in the race.

Give a cheer to Erik The Red Explorer Scout Unit in "George Vancouver" (Alex's boat)
and Petersham & Ham Scouts Supporters in "Phoenix II". (SWMBOs boat).

Our boatyard has an entry, Makerere. I think they're called the Yard Cats.

If the wind is as forecast, it won't make for a pleasant row upriver.

Also keep an eye open for our support boat, Sanfiona, which will be towing eleven boats downriver at 04.00hrs and coming back up with the race.

Our Club Lower Thames RC has three entries, the 26ft four oared Gigs Dauntless & Proud Mary plus 18ft Skiff Leigh Ho. Looks like it could be a hard pull against the wind & wet!

It was on Saturday the 5th, the start was chaos as everyone tried to launch at millwall slip, we sneaked off down the road with a few others & launched at Poplar RC slip much more civilised! watched the start & it was Magnificent. Got on the road at 12:30 & drove round the M25 to Richmond, arrived ten minutes before the first of our boats, there was a strong incoming tide which kicked up a nasty chop against the westerly headwind and at times they shipped a fair bit of water. Well done to all who took part on the water or as support boat crews. Last boat home we saw was a heroic Sea Cadet crew in an ASC nearly SIX HOURS!!!!!
If i was to design a boat to put young people off rowing for life i could do no better than one of those, hideous things that should all be turned into pond liners for child abuse!

There's always one or two!

Saw the race on my way down to Limehouse. Very pleasant to watch apart from being forced well right into the rowing channel (and shallows) on several occasions as boats kept to the middle or their left!
Got a mouthfull of abuse from several boats for taking the centre (navigable) arch at Kew rather than be forced over to the small right hand arch between the 2 piers and unknown depth.
Felt vindicated when the PLA launch came over and shouted over the loud speaker for all the rowing boats to move over to the right to allow other vessels to use the river.

A pleasant distraction otherwise. I felt sorry for the stragglers farther down who where approaching high water. I hope they got a tow!

Alex & Marian said they had seen you!

Alex's boat finished in 3h31, (3rd fastest U16 boat) and Marian's in 3h40.

The boats that were going to take over 5 hours were towed home because once the tide turns they cannot make the finish.

The boats were instructed which arch to take. Those shouting at you were almost certainly in the wrong.

The Dragonboats tend to be a bit shouty, mind you! (Sadly, 3 of them sank in the Pool of London, tee hee!).

Our boat took an hour to get from Richmond to Ham against the tide. Helen and her daughter, Ella, have been showing off their guns ever since.
