Only a couple of hours down over last year here as well.Beauty of most UK locations is that there is nearly always an alternative trip to be had,so that a day out is not cancelled.
What the Med really needs is a few nice handy scenic navigable rivers as an alternative trip when things get a bit blowy.

Mrs. carlton and I like France,we speak a bit of French (usually more than enough to get by), so we visited the South of France twice last year (during the U.K.'s 'glorious' summer) specifically to take a good look around intending to find a berth for our 10 metre sports cruiser.

What we discovered was a bit of a disappointment - the staff manning the 'better' marinas on the Riviera for instance tended to look down their noses at us at the response to (what was always) the first question they asked - "'Ow beeg ees yeur bor-tt ?". It seems they can't get excited over anything less than 15 metres...........

Add to this the fact that we spent most of the hours between midday and four p.m. sheltering from the blazing sun ( - I know - what wimps we are - ), and this with the fact that the mosquitoes are of such proportions that I'm sure they must have to shave. I ended up with more bites about my person than one of Mike Tyson's opponents.

So the dream will stay on the back-burner for now. Don't really fancy Spain 'cos we've heard too many worrying tales of 'boat-taxes' and the Guardia Civil getting a bit over-excited ( - must be the heat !).

Instead we'll be looking for a berth on the South coast of England - if the global-warming brigade are to be believed, it won't be long before it gets as hot there as the mediterranean, so it can't be all bad.......

After having a yacht in the UK (Plymouth) which took as long to get to on a summer Friday evening as our current yacht in Mediterranean Spain, we've just given a commitment on a new sports cruiser at LBS for the 2008 season...that way we can avoid the "Not Enough Wind/Blowing In The Wrong Direction" problem that has plagued us for two years!!

OK - it can be too windy but apparently, according to Pam it can never be too hot!!!
We are lucky in that we can both work from anywhere, as long as there is decent internet access and an airport, so we can base ourselves out in the Med for a few weeks at a time without too much difficulty.

To echo another poster....it's not ALL it's cracked up to be, but we believe the weather makes it.

Old age, Clive. I don't have the stamina any more /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The Med is great if a) you are retired. b) Unemployed or c) self employed.

Whilst it only takes about 4 hours door to boat, the commitment to go requires forward planning and flight times are not always ideal, so a weekend will usually become Thursday to Tuesday. Fine if you are one of the above. I am lucky and get away from work at short notice and often so there is no competition - it's the Med for me.
If employed it would not be possible to get the use out of the boat and then we would definatly move back to the UK.
