Agree - I took a run down to Poole from the Hamble. Lovely run down if a bit on the nippy side. Round trip 72.8 nms. Can't do anything about speed down the Hamble, but it does shorten the jouney time with no speed restriction in Poole.

I think I'll go out tomorrow as well. I've been stuck in a classroom all week so need the air!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Funny thing is, everytime I've been to Bigbury, it's been low tide. Been countless times, always low tide. Not planned that way, just how it happened. Then just once, last year or maybe the year before. We arived at high tide and went up the river. bit tight and twisty at times but what a lovely place. Did not find anywhere that looked safe to stop though.!!

Oh, fine, if "Mucky" has been up there then I'll give it a go next time I'm off Burgh Island.
I don't think that you can get in or out outside of about 1.5 hrs either side of HW or at least I've never tried it then. Can be very interesting in any sort of swell, especially when you have to turn to Stbd just past the painted rock. Also is a hell of a tide running especially at Springs where the river narrows - very difficult not to overshoot into the moorings. You can anchor in a few spots further upstream and you may stay afloat at LW. I have got up as far as Aveton Gifford in an outboard powered 20ftr.

What painted rock!!!???** Well we just found ourselves there. Think I was with LJ, cant remember! Maybe Dirty Lurker? Anyway there looked to be a bit of water so just carried on. Trouble is, the chanel is a bit tight with the strong current and the mooring buoys, was a bit worried that the arse end would go up the bank!! Got as far as the pub. Looked very shallow after that, with loads of rowing boats in the way. Thort it better to escape whilst the going was good!!

I have never been brave enough to enter the river, perhaps the Plymouth branch of the forum could organise an expedition when the weather gets a bit warmer.
We should actually consider a sort of informal cruising club from Plymouth, there appears to be plenty of members located in and around this area.
I will add a post and see if there is any resopnse.
