Ruined for me by poor editing. VIC 32 approaching Bellanoch Bride from Crinan then next shot heading back towards the basin. Next shot shows the puffer heading from lock 14 to Bellanoch. Very confusing and more mistakes before and after.

I haven't watched this weeks episode yet, however last week on the Caledonian Canal, they were remarking on the "lovely purple heather" on the canal banks. In fact Rosebay willowherb, AKA railway weeds.

Surprised it wasnot picked up.

Thanks a bundle!

I haven't watched it yet but now you've completely ruined my enjoyment of it :disgust:

Next you'll be telling us Turner's painting of The Fighting Temeraire shows her heading in the wrong direction!

Yes, I noticed that too, but it didn't spoil for me, a lovely reminder of the beauty and pleasure of the Caley Canal.

Tim obviously never asked Richard the engineer anything. He wittered on about how quiet the bilge pump was. He was looking at the water output from the condenser cooling circuit. VIC 32 is not a "true canal puffer" but the sea going outside boat design. Exhaust from the low pressure cylinder goes to the condenser to recover fresh water, as the sea boats could not afford to dump exhaust steam up the funnel. Lots of mistakes / confusion but good to look at anyway.

I think you're confusing that with Turner's painting Fishermen at Sea - where the moon is in front of the clouds.

If you're concerned about poor editing, think what it must be like for the Bellanoch Bride.

Both I and the good lady wife commented on that at the time. Still poor Pru does have a "slight condition" so we overlooked it.

Agreed, loads of continuity and editing mistakes, and of course the unforgivable heather/weed gaff,

BUT,

as a travelogue, a showcase for unbeatable scenery and a whimsical voyage through old age it should be forgiven for the errors.

I'm glad the skipper had the common-sense and good seamanship to turn back to Tobermory. Going outside Mull, past Treshnish, Gometra and Staffa would have been very unpleasant, to say the least.

I find it sad that two elderly people who we knew when they were in their prime are playing out the end of their lives on TV

Perhaps, but credit to them for not giving in and taking-up the slippers and shawl.
Old age can be sad, but better if it's not given in to.

So says he as a young 68 year old :encouragement:

Totally agree... Last year, we took a 2 week charter in the Canal du Midi, with the same company(Minervois cruisers) which had been used by Tim &Pru on their programme.
The staff told us that the only time that Tim was allowed behind the wheel was when filming was taking place ,as he was absolutely lethal, completely unable to handle the boat. The charter crew hid below when the cameras were rollng.
Having said that, they are getting the best out f he time that hey have left.
recorded last nights episode (CH4 .... adverts) will watch soon.

I suspect either of them will be totally devastated when the other falls off the twig.

I was amazed in the Scottish episode that there were no other boats about whilst they were underway. I wonder if the crew had all other traffic halted during filming.

I too wondered that, but then thought to logistics would be majorly problematic.

I was amused to hear Tim say (at least I think I did) that the Ft. Augustus locks staircase was put in place to prevent Loch Ness draining away.
Anyone else hear his comment?

Word had gone out that they were around so everyone stayed off the water those days....
