I have used up my small 25g tube of Volvo Fett grease. It came with my Volvo hub and prop. Is Fett grease a specific type of grease for underwater for installations like the prop hub to drive shaft?

I googled Fett grease and it seems commonly used on motorcycles but I'm not sure if it's the same stuff. I can't see why motorbikes would need an underwater grease.

(The Volvo stuff has the following part number 828250-1)

Can anyone enlighten me?

I would use one of the readily available Ramonol greases. Either Ramonol White grease or Ramonol Advanced grease https://www.gruebb.com/catlist.php?catid=29

Heh. No it isn't. Fett is merely the German word for grease :playful: - the label is in multiple languages...

The blue Volvo prop shaft grease is a molybdenum disulphide grease and very good for underwater use. Around a fiver for the 25g tube and also available in 400g. I would recommend getting some more for the job.

Would this be the right grease for the engine/gearbox drive shaft splines, ( as well as for the sail drive shaft/prop hub)?

Pardon my ignorance on grease types here. It seems to me there are specific applications with potential consequences if the wrong type is used in marine applications.
 
Stop Stop Stop !!!. It is not a molybdenum disulphides grease. If it was it would be black. One of the reasons the Volvo seal is (or can be) so good is that it is lubricated with an appropriate (blue) silicone base grease which the grease you refer to, is. Mineral oil based (lithium soap thickened) greases (which I believe the Ramonol product to be though stand corrected if wrong) will almost certainly cause a degree of swelling/deformation of the seal over time and reduce its life. This is a great example of using the right grease for the right application :). There are of course other factors regarding water compatibility etc but this is the main one to be aware of with this application.

So can I get a silicone based grease without paying Volvo prices? Or just buying locally without the visit to a chandelers?
 
You could but the Volvo grease will be stuffed with other additives for the application. It is expensive for a reason and not just because it is Volvo labelled :)

Its expensive because believe it or not Volvo dont make grease they just repack it and factor the price up! Esp Marine product

I don't know how you can say that unless you have "inside knowledge" . At Caltex we used to blend up our own motor oil from X9 different ingredients and we also blended up a motor oil for an associated company (but different brand name) from X5 different ingredients.

Certainly I bought a tub of the blue grease and used it successfully within my Volvo dripless shaft seal for a number of years. Cheaper and worked well.

Just remember to visit McDonalds on your way to the boatyard as they have the best large diameter straws to use to insert the grease into the seal.

So because you blend your refinery now ??

I do actually have a little knowledge of the Volvo Product across the spectrum not just Marine but Truck Plant & Car and I can assure you Volvo dont make grease, oil, bearings, belts, clutches, tyres, brakes and an awful lot more!

Just because you serve cake dont make you a Baker!
